Last Wild Bison reveals one of the world’s least known but most heartbreaking wildlife stories: the ongoing slaughter of America’s last free-roaming bison.

With important archival footage from frontline activists, testimony from preeminent wildlife biologists, and profound insights from Native elders, this Redford Center-supported film raises questions about what we’ve learned since colonization and how, looking ahead, we value and protect wildness on our public lands.

We were grateful to volunteer for the non-profit Friends of the River working to stop the raising of the Shasta Dam. Last Wild Bison is a documentary that confronts the historical genocide of Bison and Native peoples during the colonization of the Great Plains, and examines the modern-day slaughter of Bison in the public lands surrounding Yellowstone National Park.

Our goal is to amplify the voices of Native Americans and conservationist allies in reshaping the historical narrative.

With important archival footage of the late Rosalie Little-Thunder (Lakota elder and Co-Founder of the Buffalo Field Campaign) and in-depth conversations with Native elders and frontline activists, our film highlights the need for truth and reconciliation and a reexamination of how we protect and value wildness in America.
