Maryland wrestling’s dual against American on Saturday has been moved to South Carroll High School.

Doors will open at 5 p.m. with the dual starting at 6 p.m. Admission is free and both teams will participate in an autograph signingafter the dual.

South Carroll wrestling has been the premier public school program in the state in recent years, finishing fifth in the final Baltimore Sun wrestling poll in 2024 after going 29-0, winning a fourth straight Carroll County championship and the program’s third straight Class 1A dual state title last season.

South Carroll has produced 11 state wrestling champions over the past three years. A number of the wrestlers who contributed to that total will make a homecoming for Saturday’s dual.

Maryland’s roster features two South Carroll graduates in redshirt freshman Michael Pizzutto and sophomore AJ Rodrigues.

A change in location sets the stage for three of South Carroll’s best to return home when Maryland and American wrestle on Saturday.

Carroll County residents will have an opportunity to comment on the chosen proposed path for the Maryland Piedmont Reliability Project at a public hearing on Wednesday.

Public Service Enterprise Group, the contractor for the Maryland Piedmont Reliability Project, will hold a public hearing from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Carroll County Agriculture Center in Westminster.

The proposed 70-mile transmission line through Carroll, Frederick and Baltimore counties is on track to be operational by June 2027. The Public Service Enterprise Group has been contracted by PJM, the organization that operates and plans Maryland’s electric grid, to build the $424 million powerline.

PSEG released 10 possible paths earlier this year. Rout H was selected because it would affect fewer homes and buildings, crosses fewer conservation easements, and because it is shorter with fewer turns, PSEG officials have said.

“Route H was selected as it performed well in the land use, social and engineering criteria categories,” PSEG’s website states. “For example, Route H impacted fewer conservation easements, had fewer residences and community facilities in close proximity to the Right-of-Way, and it was shorter and had fewer hard turns which reduces cost and complexity.”

Mount Airy town officials got approval this week to use savings from a state-funded playground project to fund additional improvements in the town’s Rails to Trails project.

The Board of Carroll County Commissioners at their meeting Thursday unanimously approved the town’s request to take $37,731.76 left over from a playground equipment project at Summit Ridge Park, and put it toward Rails to Trails.

The funding comes from the state’s Program Open Space for fiscal 2024. The program provides financial and technical assistance to local jurisdictions for the planning, acquisition and/or development of recreation land or open space areas.

“Back in (fiscal 2024) they were allocated $138,687 to complete a playground project at their Summit Ridge Park,” said Bob Hicks, director of the county’s Department of Recreation and Parks. “Their project has been completed and it came in under budget, so they have a remaining balance of $37,731.76. They want to reallocate it toward some improvements to their Rail and Trails project that they’re doing at the east side of Main Street.”

Glenelg field hockey coach Martie Dyer found herself getting emotional during a fourth-quarter timeout. The No. 2 seed Gladiators maintained a one-goal lead inside of eight minutes remaining over No. 3 Queen Anne’s in Wednesday’s Class 2A state semifinal at Glen Burnie.

Choking up, Dyer told her girls, “Girls, you’ve got seven minutes left. You’ve got to get out there and give it everything you have.” Several Gladiators responded to her plea saying, “We got this, coach.”

In a critical moment, Glenelg turned to its leading scorer — senior Brinkley Eyre. She meandered around several defenders and was awarded a penalty stroke with 4:15 remaining.

The four-year varsity starter buried the shot past a diving Cassidy Alexander. That insurance goal boosted Glenelg’s confidence as sophomore Meghan Walker added another goal less than three minutes later, sealing the Gladiators’ 4-1 win.

Glenelg (16-0) advances to Saturday’s 2A state championship game for a fourth straight season. The three-time defending 2A champs will face top-seed Manchester Valley at 11 a.m. Saturday at Stevenson University.
