Hale County Sheriff’s Office has received numerous calls regarding a phone scam in which someone by the name David Marshal (and others) are impersonating officers.
During these calls the alleged officer attempts to scare the caller by threatening jail time for Failure to Appear for jury duty. Once the person believes they’ve missed this court date the officer then ask for money.
THIS IS NOT HALE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE! DO NOT SEND MONEY. HANG UP IMMEDIATELY!

Happy 4th of July 🇺🇸 🇺🇸
07/04/2024
It's a holiday tradition! 🇺🇸
No, not hot dogs and patriotic t-shirts...we're talking about the predictable July 4th calls about FAWNS ON THE GROUND IN THE HEAT.
👂🏼LISTEN: fawns belong on the ground. In fact, they will spend their whole life in contact with the ground. Just because you ✨ see one ✨ doesn't mean there is a situation that requires your heroism.
🥵 YES IT'S HOT! The wildlife that lives in Alabama doesn't need/expect you to fix this for them. If you see an animal in distress in the sun (happens often with baby birds), you may opt to safely 𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐝𝐞. Then leave. So simple!
🗣️ STOP "searching for the doe." It makes no sense. The more you look for her, the farther and longer she stays away.
Some does will only tend the fawn once every 21 or so hours. But you should be far enough away that you don't know her schedule. LEAVE THEM ALONE!

Have a safe and happy 4th of July from all of us at Moundville Times!

⛱ 👀 If you're a weekend beachgoer or know of a family member/friend planning such, eyes on this post: While Hurricane Beryl is expected to track well south of Alabama, the system is likely to cause an increase in life-threatening rip currents, even for experienced swimmers! Check conditions on your way to the beach (online and/or beach warning flags) and stay out of the water should this threat materialize. US National Weather Service Mobile Alabama will keep everyone updated. Rip currents are a danger that is not well known to those visiting from inland locations, especially well inland. Educate yourself, save a life. ➡️weather.gov/tae/ripcurrentawareness
How about back here in central Alabama? The July 4th forecast is fairly routine -- hot 'n humid with some PM showers and storms. By fireworks time, things are looking pretty good based on the current outlook. The weekend could offer a bit more in the way of showers and storms.

Did you know... both first responder agencies AND individual community members can receive FREE Naloxone and Fentanyl test strips.
Naloxone, sold under the name Narcan, is a prescription medication used to rapidly reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. When used immediately after an overdose, naloxone can block the effects of the opioids and help prevent death. Naloxone’s effects are temporary, so it’s critical to seek medical attention immediately after it is administered.

About 300 K-12 students from across Alabama were in Tuscaloosa over the weekend to participate in the Alabama Robotics Competition hosted by The University of Alabama College of Engineering. The competition introduces students to computer science and teaches basic programming skills through interactive challenges. Teams are judged on their programming skills by writing programs onsite to navigate their robots across a series of obstacle courses. UA has hosted the Alabama Robotics Competition since 2011. In addition to the students, hundreds of teachers, volunteers and family members also attended the event. Fatality may have occurred after two wrecks were reported on I-20/59 By Tommy McGraw & Herman Ward, Jr. Interstate 20/59 in Sumter County has been shut down due to at least two wrecks in the same vicinity that may have caused the death of a person involved. Unconfirmed reports by witnesses on the scene are that a person has died at the scene of the wrecks. Sumter County Record-Journal reporter Herman Ward was on the scene and shot photos and this video of what appears to be a deceased person behind a sheet on the northbound side of the interstate. Troopers reported one wreck at 3:41 a.m involving a tractor-trailer vehicle between York and Cuba. The following is the advisory report from troopers: “TUSCALOOSA POST – A single-vehicle crash involving a commercial vehicle occurred at approximately 3:41 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, and has caused a lane closure. The northbound lanes of Interstate 59 near the 11-mile marker, in Sumter County are currently blocked and will be for an undetermined amount of time. The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) and Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Highway Patrol Division are on the scene. “ALDOT has established a detour at Exit 8 onto U.S. 11 which allows traffic back onto Interstate 59 at Exit 17. ALEA Troopers will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates accordingly," according to Corporal Reginal M. King with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. Troopers issued a second advisory later in the morning of August 9 about the second accident that stated: “TUSCALOOSA POST – A two-vehicle crash involving two commercial vehicles occurred at approximately 8:51 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, and has caused a lane closure.
