CORRECTION: Atchison, Holt counties U.S. Route 59 resurfacing to begin Sept. 9

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – A project to resurface portions of U.S. Route 59 is scheduled to begin Monday, Sept. 9. Herzog Contracting Corp., working with the Missouri Department of Transportation, will resurface the first portion of Route 59 from the intersection of Missouri Route 46 near Fairfax in Atchison County to the intersection of Holt County Route O near Oregon. Once complete, crews will then resurface and widen the shoulders of Route 59 from Holt County Route O to Interstate 29.

During construction, the roadway will be narrowed to one lane with flaggers and a pilot car guiding motorists through the work zone from 6 a.m. – 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. A 10-foot width restriction will be in place.

Both sections are planned to be resurfaced by November 2024.

As a part of this project, Route 59 from the Iowa state line to Missouri Route 136 near Tarkio in Atchison County, and U.S. Route 159 from Little Tarkio Creek to I-29 near Mound City are planned to be resurfaced in 2025. These projects are scheduled to be completed by November 2025.

Atchison, Holt counties U.S. Route 59 resurfacing to begin Sept. 9

A project to resurface portions of U.S. Route 59 is scheduled to begin Monday, Sept. 9. Herzog Contracting Corp., working with the Missouri Department of Transportation, will resurface the first portion of Route 59 from the intersection of Missouri Route 46 near Fairfax in Atchison County to the intersection of Holt County Route O near Oregon.

Crews will begin work near Fairfax and work toward Oregon. During construction, the roadway will be narrowed to one lane with flaggers and a pilot car guiding motorists through the work zone from 6 a.m. – 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. A 10-foot width restriction will be in place.

These routes are planned to be resurfaced by November 2024.

As a part of this project, Route 59 from east of Holt County Route B to Interstate 29, Route 59 from the Iowa state line to Missouri Route 136 near Tarkio in Atchison County, and U.S. Route 159 from Little Tarkio Creek to I-29 near Mound City is planned to be resurfaced in 2025. I-29 – Concrete replacement northbound driving lane from mile marker 75.6 to mile marker 75.8, Aug. 8-9.

U.S. Route 59 – CLOSED to through traffic for bridge maintenance from Route 46 near Fairfax to Route 111 in Craig, Aug. 5, 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. No traffic will be permitted across the bridge.

Holt County U.S. Route 59 to close for emergency bridge deck repair

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Holt County U.S. Route 59 bridge over Interstate 29 north of Craig will be closed on Monday, August 5, from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. for an emergency bridge deck repair.

Route 59 will be closed from Missouri Route 46 near Fairfax to Missouri Route 111 in Craig. Crews will maintain access for property owners on either side of the bridge in the closure area. No traffic will be permitted on/across the bridge.

Interstate 29 to close through St. Joseph beginning tomorrow, Tuesday, July 16
Cook Road Bridge rehabilitation project

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The north and southbound lanes of Interstate 29 through St. Joseph will close beginning at 4 a.m. tomorrow, Tuesday, July 16, and reopen by 4 a.m. on Friday, July 19. Clarkson Construction Company, along with the Missouri Department of Transportation, will close the interstate to demolish the existing deck, install new beams and paint the girders of the Cook Road Bridge.

During the 72-hour closure, traffic will be directed on the same signed detour onto I-229 that was used early this month. Southbound I-29 traffic must exit at I-29/I-229/U.S. Route 71 (EXIT 56B) and northbound I-29 traffic must exit at the I-229/I-29 (EXIT 43). Click to view the detour map.

Local traffic will not be able to access I-29 at the following locations:

Northbound I-29 from:
Route 6 (Frederick Blvd.) – Exit 47
U.S. Route 36 – northbound Exits 46A & 46B
Southbound I-29 from:
Business Route 71/US. Route 59 – Exit 53
U.S. Route 169 (Rochester Rd) – Exit 50
The contractor must close the roadway for the safety of crews. motorists. This is the second of several closures of I-29 that will occur during the project.
The Cook Road Bridge rehabilitation project will widen the bridge and replace it’s driving surface. The City of St. Joseph has also allocated funds to add a pedestrian sidewalk to the south side of the bridge which will include decorative fencing and concrete sides. The project is anticipated to be complete by October 2024.

In addition, overnight lane closures on I-29 below the bridge may occur between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. at various dates during the project. A 12-foot width restriction will be in place.

MoDOT to hold open-house meeting for projects in Atchison, Holt counties

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Transportation will host a public meeting in Craig, Mo., to discuss upcoming bridge deck replacement projects on Holt County U.S. Route 59.

You are invited to attend a public open house meeting on Monday, May 6, at the Craig Elementary School, 402 N. Ward St., Craig, MO 64437. Attendees are welcome to come any time between 4-6 p.m. to speak with project leaders. There will be no formal presentation.

This meeting will allow the public to share their thoughts and concerns about the plans for each of the bridge projects and to provide comments, either directly to the engineers or through the comment form, on those concerns. MoDOT engineers will also be available to answer questions regarding other planned Statewide Transportation Improvement Program projects and maintenance work in the area.

If you are unable to attend the open house, two other opportunities for public comment are available through Monday, May 20, 2024.

Route P – Pavement repairs from Route 118 to County Road 220, April 22, 6:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. The road will be narrowed to one lane during working hours.

Route C – CLOSED for pavement repairs from Route N to Route DD, April 22-23, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily.
