You probably visited this place for Halloween!

On October 25, 1829, Philadelphia's infamous "Eastern State Penitentiary" opened its doors. This prison would keep its inmates locked entirely in solitary confinement. It would close in 1971, later to become a museum and tourist attraction.

You can read about this, other prisons, and a variety of Philadelphia history you might not have known in Volume 3 of "Sharf's History of Philadelphia" originally published in 1884.

Why is Maryland shaped like that??? Why is Delaware shaped like that??

It's all because of a land dispute with Pennsylvania that escalated into a small war in the 1730s and wasn't fully resolved until Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon completed their 5-year-long land survey in October of 1767. The result was the Mason-Dixon line, whose legacy as a boundary would long outlive its creators.

Who was paying attention in US History class?

On October 7, 1763 King George III Issued one of the infamous "intolerable acts", the Proclamation of 1763. This proclamation stated that no European settler may live west of the Allegheny mountains, and any who already lived there had to move.
