This is a big week for college football with the NFL Draft and the future of college football altogether. This week, the leaders of the College Football Playoff will meet for the spring meetings, where they will reflect and discuss the future of the playoff format.

These discussions could greatly impact West Virginia because its path to the postseason could change.

The nation’s longest winning streak came to an end Tuesday night, as 14th-ranked WVU continued to struggle on the road against Penn State.

The Nittany Lions held on for a 3-2 victory inside Medlar Field, with the Mountaineers (34-5) stranding Grant Hussey at second base in the ninth inning as the potential tying run.

Nothing pumps up a team more than when their goalie makes a big save.

But as far as Morgantown boys lacrosse keeper Dylan Shinkovich is concerned, his job is just getting started, as his quick outlets and long, accurate clears helped jump-start the sluggish Mohigans offense last night against the Linsly School, sparking MHS to an impressive 19-7 victory in their final home game of the regular season.

Thursday night, the 2025 NFL Draft kicks off, where players’ dreams come true of becoming an NFL player after all the hard work in the collegiate ranks.

Over the past two NFL drafts, there’s only been one West Virginia player taken each year, and this year could be the same.

The Mountaineers have produced NFL-level talent, but recently, there haven’t been too many WVU players selected.

Ross Hodge added another critical piece to the West Virginia men’s basketball roster with a commitment from highly sought after North Dakota transfer guard Treysen Eaglestaff.

Eaglestaff, 6-foot-6, 190-pounds, originally committed to South Carolina March 30 but backed off that pledge and drew interest from a long list of schools including Kentucky, Gonzaga, Iowa, BYU and others once he opened things up April 16.

College football took another step toward the professional level on Saturday.

Tennessee star quarterback Nico Iamaleava sat out of practices and meetings over NIL contract disputes. He was expected to make $2 million for the 2025 season, but wanted a rumored $4 million. Iamaleava wasn’t going to play until he received more money.

This is another step toward the professional level because NFL players always hold out over wanting a new contract, but this is the first time we see it at the collegiate level.

It was only fitting that on senior day, a group of seniors led the University High School baseball team to an 11-2 win over visiting Lincoln on Wednesday.

Senior pitcher Jacob Kennison got the start on the mound for the Hawks (7-10) and 3.1 innings of two-hit baseball before turning the ball over to fellow seniors Lukas Neer and Daniel Grabo.

At the end of the Gold-Blue Spring Showcase, Rich Rodriguez stood in line to sing “Take Me Home, Country Roads” with the fans, students, players and staff. He was emotional and told his players that this was personal to him. Listening to the John Denver song this time around meant more than ever.

It’s a well-known tradition in Morgantown. After a win, “cue ‘Country Roads’” is murmured throughout the fans, no matter the age. However, the current students or younger generation of Mountaineer fans might not know how the tradition started or that the man the man who started the tradition is back.

The second of two, and final, transfer portal windows is now open to finalize fall rosters. West Virginia and Rich Rodriguez took full advantage of the winter window, adding 31 players.

Over the past week following the end of spring practice, Rodriguez made roster cuts to create space to add more players and help reach the maximum roster size of 105 by the fall. Over twenty and counting Mountaineers planned on entering the portal before it even officially opened.

If you were able to take J.J. Quinerly’s speed, defensive capabilities and ability to get to the rim and put it inside a 6-foot-1 body, it’s likely you’d have a future WNBA All-Star prospect.

“She’s going to be a little bit smaller, so somebody is going to have to figure out what that niche is in the WNBA,” WVU women’s basketball coach Mark Kellogg said.

West Virginia redshirt senior wide receiver Jaden Bray has been unlucky when it comes to catching the injury bug. He’s been injured in two of his four seasons in college football, and last year, he missed most of the season with a lower leg injury.

Bray had a lot of promise after a 30-reception season at Oklahoma State in 2023, transferring to the Mountaineers as a 3-star transfer portal prospect. An injury plagued his Morgantown start, but wasn’t bummed out about his season last year.
