1879 - James Shields began a term as a U.S. Senator from Missouri. He had previously served Illinois and Minnesota. He was the first Senator to serve three states.
1917 - U.S. President Wilson pleaded for an end to war in Europe, calling for "peace without victory." America entered the war the following April.
1930 - In New York, excavation began for the Empire State Building.
Sir Walter Raleigh 1553- English statesman, soldier, writer and explorer. he played a leading part in English colonisation of North America, He was granted a royal patent to explore Virginia, paving the way for future English settlements.
Noah Phelps 1740- Fought during the Revolutionary War and afterward was selected as a major general. He was chosen as a Delegate to the 1788 state convention that ratified the Constitution of the United States.[1]
Fred Moore Vinson 1890- attorney and politician who served as the 13th chief justice of the United States Vinson was one of the few Americans to have served in all three branches of the U.S. government. Before becoming chief justice, Vinson served as a U.S. Representative from Kentucky from 1924 to 1928 and 1930 to 1938, as a federal appellate judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit from 1938 to 1943, and as the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury from 1945 to 1946
