Our Story

We rise to be change-makers in our community through education, advocacy, innovation and activism. By encouraging civic involvement, we are able to build a coalition of groups to heighten the conversation and seek solutions toward homelessness, food security, environmental destruction, and promote cooperative business development, single-payer health advocacy, and community rights.

Our goal is to continue building on our foundation to serve and educate a poverty-stricken population on how to launch their fight for self-determination through activism and finding their voice. We are educating and outreaching to the most vulnerable populations. Poverty, Education, and health issues are the greatest social determinants in the county. Statistics show that the people of Grays Harbor are more likely to have chronic health issues, mental health difficulties, drug and alcohol abuse. Our intention is to continue advocating, educating, outreaching, and hosting events as we continue to build our coalition.

Currently we work throughout Grays Harbor County where the population is 70,818 with 19% in poverty compared to 13.2% in Washington State. Grays Harbor County faces challenges due to a declining population and growing unemployment rate.

Our mission is to activate the people of Grays Harbor (GH) to become involved in our community- to make this a place where everyone thrives. We work toward what we want, rather than against what we don't. Through education and outreach we energize the people of GH to seek and implement solutions to the problems we face, the most prevalent of which is poverty. Through advocacy, we raise the voices of everyday people. Through innovation we will create a democratic economy that works for all of us.

We found each other in the summer of 2016, where many people joined for first time into the struggle for “A Future to Believe In”. We began having monthly meetings, listening and learning from each other.

As we research and listen to one another we recognized that our major issue in GH is a society where too many of us are focused on survival. Democracy Rising serves people surviving on a low-income; struggling senior citizens, adults, youth, and individuals and families experiencing homelessness; people with healthcare issues, and impoverished families. We also focus on unemployed, and marginalized communities such as youth with special needs, Hispanic/Latinos, Indigenous People, and Women.

Representatives from Veterans, Communities of Color, Seniors, and Women’s Groups are involved in the decision-making for the coalition. These individuals are responsible for selecting the “Convener” and “Treasurer, then share in the note-taking. They are also involved in leading some of the workshops. These representatives are from Citizens for a Clean Harbor, Grays Harbor Housing Coalition, Coastal Unity, Grays Harbor Youth Works, and SustainaRatio.

We work in a cooperative model where anyone can lead as the Convener. For example on January 28, 2017 a young member of our group organized 70 people to march through our town in rejection to HB 1002 and HB 1003, introduced by our then brand new state representative Jim Walsh. Both of those bills intended to limit access to women’s health.

We hold monthly public meetings on the first Tuesday of each month at the public library where we plan a workshop or share information pertaining to the schedule or current events in the community. The coalition share at the beginning of all workshops and events with the accomplishments of the group since 2016.

Democracy Rising stands firmly in our belief that all people have the right to autonomy and self-determination. We are outraged that oppression exists at all, but we are willing to use our ‘white privilege’ to raise up the voices of those who need it, and step aside when they choose to lead. We are working to make this a place where everyone thrives.

Our demographics do reflect a majority white population, but our friend Mashayla sums it up nicely in her speech at the Seattle Mass Meeting of The Poor People's Campaign: A National Call For a Moral Revival, “We are radical rednecks, hillbillies for the liberation of people… We are willing to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with anyone willing to take up this campaign. And believe me, we’re the kind of scrap you want on your side in a fight.”
