Uncle Nearest, also known as Daniel Green, was a formerly enslaved man who became the first known African American master distiller. Nathan Green was born into slavery around 1820 in Maryland and later worked on the 300 Acre farm of Dan Call in Lynchburg, Tennessee.
Daniel Green and an orphan named Jasper Newton Daniel (Later known as Jack Daniels) worked for Reverend Call on his Tennessee farm. Green became renowned for his exceptional whiskey-making skills. In particular, Green’s mastery of the Lincoln County Process , charcoal mellowing, which filtered the spirit through sugar maple charcoal. This process acts as a natural purifier removing impurities and imparting characteristic Tennessee smoothness before aging in barrels.
Descendants of Nathan Green have worked continuously at the Jack Daniel Distillery since its establishment—seven generations in all. And although the pivotal role Nathan Green played in establishing what is arguably the single most famous whiskey on the planet is common knowledge in Lynchburg, Tennessee, it was unknown to many. That is until Historian and Entreprenuer Fawn Weaver, became the CEO of Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey in 2017.
