Today’s upgrades for Providence HS, Charlotte, NC

Modern Style Randall May Carriers w/ the Dolphin Fin

•Add 1/4” Split Lock washers to prevent loosening of regular carrier adjustments from vibrations.

•5/16” split lock washer for the contour hinge to stiffen and secure the hinge from loosening.

Available at any hardware store with a lifetimes supply for around $10

•Wrapping the shoulder blades with 3 layers of Athletic tape. It comes in various colors and is easily accessible from Pharmacies (CVS & Walgreens), sporting stores (Dicks Sporting Goods) , & large Retailers (Walmart).

Final upgrades for the Randall May Stands for Providence HS in Charlotte, NC. I’m glad to see these stands working better than ever (and that it’s finally over).

1. Old vs New cross dowel nuts. Old comes standard on all Randall May stands.

2. The new cross dowel nuts are made of stainless steel, provide more surface area to disperse the torque from the quick release handle, and have a tight fitting rubber grommet to ensure a smoother rotation path (if this doesn’t work I’ll press a nylon washer on top).

3. Replaced the button head screws with eyebolts and 2 nylon lock nuts to secure the clamp to the tenor stands. The eyebolt also functions as the top attachment point to use the bungee cord (from a previous upgrade) as a carrying strap.

4. Installed the new Stand Height (RM-SH42) memory locks with stainless steel set screws.

These Randall May Snare stands are ready for Spring Training at Providence HS! Mailbox Numbering, hardware upgrades on the fasteners, nuts and added washers will make these last for years to come! All that’s left is to install memory locks when I can get back to the school and we’re good to go!

Close up of the upgrades made to these Randall May Bass Stands for Providence High School in Charlotte, NC.

Pic 1: Longer stainless steel (and some grade 8) bolts with additional washers for longevity; and lock nuts to prevent the bolts from falling out…ever. Stand Height Memory Lock with set screws (Memory Lock 1)

Pic 2 & 3:Longer and more ergonomic thumb screws (with more surface area coverage) for all student/pit crew set up & tear down adjustments including independent front leg for stadium use.

Pic 4 & 5: Top Memory Lock (Memory Lock 2) for angle of stabilizing arms and gaff tape bumpers for preventing damage to drum lug hardware.

Pic 6 & 7: Mailbox Numbering on both front and top right of stand (because the stabilizer arms can be separated for easier transport).

Today’s project: Randall May Bass stands for Providence High School in Charlotte, NC where I teach.

•Remove unnecessary adjustments (that kids/pitcrew don’t need to routinely make to set up & teardown) by replacing thumb screws with set screws.

•Tighten all fasteners, add functionality and rigidity to stands with washer upgrades, addition of lock/stop nuts, longer stainless steel bolts.

•Add additional memory locks (with set screws).

•Add longer, more ergonmic custom thumb screws.

•Add new numbering stickers.

When I arrived at Providence this past August even though this equipment is only a few years old it was in desperate need of some TLC. Now these stands should be a lot easier for the pit crew to set up, and for the kids to use! The best part is they will last for YEARS!
