TUESDAY TIP: HEADSHOTS
This is for actors and photographers
It's the responsibility of your photographer and the actor to know what is the trend in acting industry headshots in today's industry. Research your photographers- and FYI I don't think they are lying about knowing how to shoot actors they just don't know there's a huge difference in how you shoot actors.
SO MANY PHOTOGRAPHERS claim to know how to do acting headshots because they do Business headshots. πNOT THE SAME HEADSHOTS AT ALL! The wardrobe, posing, facial expressions are all very different, you are selling you're believable acting skills, not insurance.
You're acting headshots should be thought out on your part with the correct wardrobe for your type and age range and SEVERAL outfits for different character roles. It is your job as an actor to come prepared with "acting roles" already thought out and have the wardrobe to match. So with each look you will change outfits, hair, mood, role type and facial expressions and sometimes makeup. Do not wear/show props or costumes. You dress to suggest your character.
GONE are the day where a photographer puts you in 2 different shirts and do a smile a non-smile headshot - that trend passed many years ago.
You're agent, acting mentor or acting teacher/coach can refer great acting headshot photographers to you in your market. This is a step in your acting career that isn't negotiable when you are starting in this industry. It's what every CD and agent looks at to decide whether or not to give you an audition.
DISCLAIMER: DO NOT SHOOT YOUR OWN HEADSHOTS. Even actors who shoot acting headshots have someone else do it to bring the best shots out of them. I can tell when you're trying to shoot your own headshot in your self tape set up.....
