I remember the Woolworth lunch counter in downtown Moberly where Best TV is currently located and the Burton Rexall Lunch counter which remained a long time gathering place for many more years downtown. How about you? What other fond memories do you have from days gone by about downtown Moberly?

The Woolworths downtown lunch counter, a beloved fixture of mid-20th-century America, was a bustling hub of social interaction and simple, affordable meals. Located in the heart of downtown areas, these lunch counters offered a variety of classic American dishes such as hamburgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, and the iconic soda fountain treats like milkshakes and sundaes.

Woolworths lunch counters were more than just a place to eat; they were community gathering spots where people from all walks of life came together. Shoppers, workers, and students alike would sit side by side, enjoying the friendly, casual atmosphere. These counters were known for their efficient service and welcoming ambiance, making them a popular choice for a quick bite or a leisurely meal.

In addition to their role in daily life, Woolworths lunch counters also hold a significant place in American history. During the Civil Rights Movement, they became sites of important protests and sit-ins, most notably the Greensboro sit-ins of 1960, where four African American college students challenged racial segregation by sitting at a "whites-only" counter.

The Woolworths lunch counter represents a nostalgic snapshot of a bygone era, reflecting both the simple pleasures and the profound social changes of mid-20th-century America.

Our Story

KZZT Radio-From an impossible dream in 1971 of a 20 year old College Student to a reality in business in 1987, KZZT Radio became the talk of North Central Missouri, bringing music of the time to an area that was in need, Moberly,MO.

Since April 10th, 1987, KZZT has been providing non-stop contemporary music based programming to Moberly and surrounding areas. We started with 3000 watts of power with a mission to grow. A short time later we were authorized to increase to 6000 watts of power, later 25,000 watts of power. After that we went to 28,500 watts of power and soon after became a true Regional Powerhouse Station when we increased to 50,000 watts, the maximum wattage and the maximum antenna height allowed for our class of station. In addition, we’ve grown from one single station to a Small Group of Radio Stations today with nine Missouri based signals. These nine signals (7 FM & 2 AM) deliver music based programming and more that originates from four different studio & market locations.

We’re grateful that you have allowed us and continue to allow us to be a part of your day, your life, your memories and more. We’re grateful to our many advertisers who pay the bills and make it work, and the fact you, our listeners respond to advertiser’s messages and support our local merchants because without that, none of this would be possible. We’re grateful to our staff, past, present and future, which have put in countless hours and continue to do so to make the magic of radio come to life. And most importantly, we’re grateful to God for the opportunity and ability to be a part of something so special for all these many years.

We also want to say we’re proud that KZZT is the ONLY locally owned and operated radio station in the Moberly Market area! It’s a fact we would never believed possible or even considered back in 1987! But here we are today, with the same mission and commitment to provide music based, contemporary styled programming to Moberly and the surrounding area that we had on day one. Plus, the same overall ownership and management remains intact. Phil Chirillo, the man who had that impossible dream back in 1971 is still the majority Stockholder, Director and President of the company. Dale Palmer who helped put all the pieces of the puzzle together and the man who flipped the transmitter switch to ON back in 1987 is a Director, Stockholder and continues to serve as General Manager. Yes, both of these guys were here on day one, are still here today and must be as old as dirt itself. And while these two may not radiate quite as well as in the past, nor do it with as much frequency, and while it may appear future rock and roll endeavors may involve rocking chairs and wheel chairs, just remember ... the towers are still standing, the lights are on and flashing, and the rock is still rolling. Yes, we still live here, we hire here, pay taxes here, spend money here and we’re proud that 105.5 FM, KZZT is still rockin’ Moberly and North Missouri from here!
