Have you ever had an outdoor mishap in Moab? An adventure that went a little sideways? Maybe even *seriously* sideways? We want to hear from you!

KZMU, in collaboration with Grand County Utah Economic Development, Grand County Active Transportation and Trails, and Grand County Sheriff's Search and Rescue, is launching a new podcast series highlighting real life rescue stories to educate and empower outdoor enthusiasts.

If you’ve ever been caught in extreme desert weather, bit off a bit more than you could chew in your outdoor activity of choice, or even experienced an injury that required rescue, we want to hear your story. By sharing it, you can play a vital role in preventing future injury - and worse - in Moab’s great outdoors.

Reach out to us today! DM or email [email protected].

Be part of this preventative search and rescue effort, and consider sharing your experience to help others stay safe! Learn more: https://www.kzmu.org/call-for-stories-moab-podcast-seeks-local-rescue-stories-for-outdoor-safety-education/

On the latest This Week in Moab, we hear from Science Moab's executive director, Carrie Schwartz. The nonprofit elevates the exciting science around the Colorado Plateau, and is bringing back 'Science on Screen' events to Swanny City Park. Plus, later in the program we have Karen Guzman-Newton, whose research at the University of Utah found that Moab's Main Street is Utah's deadliest. Guzman-Newton will discuss the grassroots effort around making Main Street safer for the public.

For six years, Moab City has made various attempts to build workforce housing at the Walnut Lane trailer park without displacing current residents. And for six years, these efforts have fallen short for a variety of reasons. Now, the story of Moab City and Walnut Lane has reached a new low. Facing a pending loss of insurance for the trailer park, city officials are now requiring all tenants vacate their homes. Today on the news, we speak with interim city manager David Everitt and city council member Kaitlin Myers, who variously describe this turn of events as “painful, devastating, and heartbreaking.”

On the latest This Week in Moab, we have a conversation with Lena Pace, the new superintendent of the Southeast Utah Group of National Parks. Pace has worked all over this country: on a floating ranger station in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, to the desert of Lake Mead National Recreation Area, even the south shore of Long Island at Fire Island National Seashore. We hear about her work experience, her impressions of the Moab area, and what's ahead for Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park, Hovenweep National Monument and Natural Bridges National Monument.

It’s not unusual for ancient pottery sherds to make their way to a museum. Maybe they were found in a storage box, or were passed down by a family member, or even recently plucked illegally from public lands. The Moab Museum hopes that by hosting a weekly gathering around such sherds, they can help spread the word about the importance of leaving artifacts in place on our shared landscapes.

When writer Jim Stiles moved to Moab in the 1970s, this corner of the rural West had endured decades of boom and bust and was swiftly approaching an identity crisis. For well over three decades, Stiles opined on this very crisis with essays, photos, memories and lamentations. His alternative publication, The Canyon Country Zephyr, fostered a spirited community that often discussed what it means to 'cling hopelessly to the past.' Stiles passed away March 11th at his home in Coldwater, Kansas.

In 2007, KZMU’s Christy Williams-Dunton spoke with Stiles at his then-home in Monticello, Utah, on the occasion of the publication of his book, Brave New West: Morphing Moab at the Speed of Greed. Williams-Dunton shares this archival audio for the latest This Week in Moab. During the episode, she eulogizes Stiles as an “iconoclastic, complex person with a great sense of humor.”
