Class A’s best battle at the ‘Bowl

Hailing from the banks of Lake Sakakawea to communities along Highway 52, the proximity of players to one another on the Velva-Drake-Anamoose-Garrison Aggies is often measured in miles by folks living outside the tight-knit communities of the Class A football co-op. However, as far apart as these teammates might seem on a map, there is arguably no closer football family in North Dakota when it comes to the shared goal of bringing home a state title each and every year. Consistently serving up plenty of gridiron glory and bragging rights to one of the most electric fanbases on the prairie, the Aggies return to the confines of the FARGODOME for their second trip to the Dakota Bowl in the past three seasons. Focused on regaining their 2022 championship crown, Velva-D-A-G and their caravan of diehard supporters head east for this Friday’s title tilt against the undefeated and top-seeded Kindred Vikings.
Unbeaten for the past two seasons, the defending champion Kindred Vikings return to Fargo for their third Dakota Bowl appearance in the last four years. Taking home the Class B title in 2021 and the Class A title in 2023, the Vikings have the opportunity to further cement their dynasty status by securing the Class A throne in back-to-back campaigns. On top of racking up a near-perfect 46-2 overall record across this dominant four-year span, Kindred also holds the head-to-head win advantage over the Aggies thanks to a 13-6 season-opening win at home on Aug. 23.
Wrapping up nearly three months of North Dakota high school football coverage, the PSP Network ends the 2024 season with a bang by bringing fans of Velva-D-A-G, Kindred, and Class A action the best digital radio coverage of the Dakota Bowl via the official PSP Network website (www.psp.network) and official PSP Network page on YouTube.

#2 Velva-Drake-Anamoose-Garrison Aggies (10-1) vs #1 Kindred Vikings (12-0)

Led into battle by “The Four Horsemen of Velva-D-A-G”, the Aggies have proceeded to trample nearly every opponent in their way over the course of a three-season run that saw the gridiron titans capture a Class B state title in 2022. All-State seniors Ben Schepp (QB), Hank Bodine Jr. (RB), and wide receivers Reggie Bruner and Treyson Iglehart once again anchor a Matt Weidler-coached Velva-D-A-G roster that is as unbelievably deep as it is talented.

Taking the reigns of the Aggies after the retirement of 10-time state champion coach Larry Sandy, Weidler has the Aggies executing as explosively on offense as they are stingy on defense. During the regular season, his Velva-D-A-G squad outscored their adversaries by an astounding combined total of 376-47, or a per-game average of 47-6. Rolling this level of dominant, balanced play over into the postseason, the Aggies opened the playoffs with a 71-0 opening-round shutout of Southern McLean before dropping Harvey-Wells County in the quarterfinals 44-13 and Langdon Area-Munich 51-13 in last week’s semifinal matchup.

As for Kindred, the Vikings have spent the 2024 season sailing across the treacherous waters of Class A competition, conquering foes from across the state to land once again on the shores of the Dakota Bowl and just one win away from back-to-back undefeated state-title seasons.
Helmed by head coach Eric Burgad, Kindred returns All-State standouts Jake Starcevic and Brooks Bakko as the Vikings journey to the hallowed turf of the FARGODOME for the third time in the last four seasons. However, the powerhouse’s proven prowess has wained this postseason when compared to their near-flawless efficiency during the 2024 regular season.

After sinking their opponents by a staggering average score of 44-4 and netting five shutouts across the regular season, Kindred has averaged a more mortal 39-16 average score in playoff wins over Carrington, Shiloh Christian, and Central Cass. More noteworthy in the Vikings’ postseason trends is the fact that they have allowed more points in the past three games (49) as they did across the entirety of the nine-game regular season (38).

Nevertheless, given that the final score of their season-opening thriller with the Aggies was decided by a mere touchdown, the stage is set for a Class A instant classic on Friday at the ‘Bowl.
