“Growing up in rural Minnesota, I would get up at five in the morning and go out in the woods and sketch, which was a little unusual, but I really enjoyed it,” Jason Lee Tako says of his routine in his hometown of Faribault, Minnesota. “I really liked the solitude. There were wetlands, a lot of woodland areas and lakes.”

Anything nature set before him, Tako sketched: animals, plants, the changing sky. He wasn’t yet painting—that would come later—but he was honing his ability to capture the essence of objects and to compose eye-catching pictures.

When you ask Kathryn Ashcroft to describe her art she may say, “if you want to get a technical term for it, it’s probably abstract realism, because you can tell what it is, but it is its own thing,” she says. “Chunky is the only way I can think of to describe it.”

Kathryn Ashcroft-The Art of Nature's "chunky" wildlife painting make an impact with their bright colors and bold subjects. Learn more about her work and her career in the November/December issue of Art of the West.

The three best gifts you could give to Cindy Long are a pencil, paper, and a man with a weathered old face. Then give her a few weeks to work her magic.

The result will be a detailed, black-and-white portrait that will have you studying each line, each shadow, the eyes, the face. It will also have you wondering who he is, what he’s thinking, and what he’s experienced. And that’s exactly what Long wants.

During his 40 years as a sculptor, Alvin Marshall has been known as a visionary artist. His one-of-a-kind alabaster carvings of figures and animals—sometimes stunningly intricate, sometimes elegantly simple— are inspired by dreams, visions, and tribal ceremonies in which he has participated. His goal is to preserve Navajo traditions and share them with the world.

Nestled on a five-acre plot of land in rural Charlotte, Tennessee, Lori Putnam is living the dream in her 1,800-squarefoot studio. The open design of the studio’s structure also boasts a 700-square-foot loft that serves as living space for Putnam and her husband Mark. Looking at the building from the outside, you would assume it’s just another house but, once you walk through its doors, you realize how wrong that assumption is. The openness of the home and studio gains perspective when Putnam says there is only one door inside: the one that leads to the bathroom.

Learn more about Putnam's dream studio and how it aids in her work in the November/December Issue of Art of the West.

November/December 2024 Cover Reveal!

"A Summer Song" by Kim Wiggins makes an impact on the cover of this issue. “In 1993, I began a series of symbolic paintings focused on the inner life of the artist. There is a secret and hidden world locked within one’s thought life. Artists are introspective and often deal with the difficulties, battles, and personal struggles of the mind. This painting represents the point of enlightenment and the beauty of inspiration as it sweeps over the artist.”

Also featured in this issue are Dakota Pitts, Jason Lee Tako, Kathryn Ashcroft, Cindy Long, Alvin Marshall, and the Studio of Lori Putnam. We also dive into the life and career of Red Steagall and launch a new column titled "Perspectives"
