This week's Hot New Local Single is an original song by Leslie Vincent called "Tallying Strangers." It's from her forthcoming album, Little Black Book.
https://www.jazz88.fm/2025/11/11/hot-new-local-single-leslie-vincent/

Vincent grew up listening to Frank Sinatra as well as more contemporary vocalists like Brittany Spears, The style, phrasing, and instrumentation of her new recording harkens back to the days before rock and roll, when Sinatra, Dinah Shore, Doris Day, and Nat King Cole dominated the pop charts. Her performance is informed by a background in theatre and the striking aspect to me is the way she concisely concisely conveys a narrative.

The story that Vincent tells in this song is about frustration over the ordeal of finding love. Vincent writes, "The song is inspired by a friend frustrated by first dates. It reminded me of searching for love, how I thought I was doing all the right things, imagining my soulmate out there. It made me think about all the strangers that come into and out of our lives, and the utter unlikelihood of finding your soulmate. All this kicked off the thesis for this whole record."

The performers include Vincent on vocals, with Patrick Adkins on keyboards, Blake Foster on guitar, Matt McIntyre on bass, and Mitch Van Laar on trumpet.

An album release party for Little Black Book is taking place at the Parkway Theater Sunday night, November 16th at 7 PM.

This week’s Hot New Local Single comes to us courtesy of Abinnet Berhanu’s Ahndenet, featuring singer Genet Abate. Berhanu and Abate are both Ethiopian and the music reflects that rich heritage. The song is titled Yinegera, which in English is “Let It Be Heard.”

You can catch them Saturday, November 8th at Berlin.
Hear it on air or on our website here:
https://www.jazz88.fm/2025/11/04/hot-new-local-single-abinnet-berhanus-ahndenet/

It’s about unrequited love,or as Berhanu explains, “The story of the song lies in an unexpressed love for someone who comes into your life and passes by you routinely until one day they disappear and your day is no longer shining like before. You realize they are missing and you are not sure how to deal with a missing opportunity to express how you feel.”

It’s fun to watch Berhanu and his ensemble perform and thanks to the context he provides for the music, it’s always a learning experience. The umbrella of Ethiopian culture is actually a wealth of different cultures. Berhanu says that Yinegara emphasizes traditional parts of the Gurage (Goo-rah-gay) style. Here’s what he has to say about it:
“Gurage involves an iconic swinging drum groove, horns that take the place of a traditional instrument called the toorumba and an incredibly intense dancing style that switches up from verse to chorus. When we perform this song anywhere there are Ethiopians in the crowd, someone inevitably comes up front and makes it happen. This is definitely the crossroads of growing up on Mohammed Ahmed’s Goo-rah-gay music and traditional Ethiopian cultural music groups like Hisb Le Hisb (People to People).”
