There are A LOT of great musicians coming through Taste of MN on Saturday, July 5th!

Come hang out at the Jazzclectic Jazz88 stage, at noon we have School of Rock kicking us off. MacPhail will be next with the powerhouse voice of Connie Evingson with Patty & the Buttons at 4pm. Omar AbdulKarim with Kavyesh Kaviraj are a stellar jazz duo that bring virtuosic talent to the stage.

The night ends with the Lucia Sarmiento Quintet. Sarmiento someone we like to call a local though she now resides in Chicago, is a sax player and has been releasing album after album the past few years. This quintet is not to be missed!

Joan Hutton from Take that Back was nice enough to visit the Jazz88 studios in anticipation of their upcoming performance at Taste of MN this weekend (Sunday July 6 at 5:45). Hutton was joined by Stephanie Wiesler, who is filling in on sax and flute for Sue Orfield. The duo discussed the upcoming gig, the joys and difficulties of subbing in and the fun of playing outside!

Get ready for tomorrow's Hot New Local Single. Sean McPherson wrote about Riffin'Trio and their single, "Riffer's Theme."

I frankly didn't expect to hear recorded music from the Riffin' Trio. I knew the Riffin' Trio held court monthly over at Dusty's in Northeast Minneapolis and I figured it was a project where A-list players had some fun on the side with no recording technology insight. But I'm so glad the group ended up making some recordings! The album is called Introducing the Riffin' Trio and it features Nelson Devereaux on tenor sax, Jake Hanson on guitar and Ted Olsen on the upright. The group has dropped two new tunes with two more on the way. . .all leading up to an EP release show on August 15 over at the Turf Club.

The tune that caught my ear is "Riffer's Theme." Right out the gate we get a catchy melody carried by Devereaux and Hanson. In the absence of drums, Ted Olsen turns his bass into the whole rhythm section and the feel is spot on. The band recorded the album to four-track with no overdubs, and the resulting sound is casual and strident. It's difficult to conjure that combo of emotions in a studio, but the group succeeds all over these new recordings. It's the kind of music that puts a smile on your face, especially when it's played with as much enthusiasm and sophistication as the Riffin' Trio provides. Toss the tune on and see if it doesn't put a smile on your face!

Tune in TODAY at 3pm for American Routes:

The blues carry us from back roads to city streets, with heartache and hope in jazz, country and folk music. We’ll hear old field recordings and new commentaries in blues from Cedell Davis, Guitar Slim, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, Irma Thomas and Lucinda Williams. Then, it’s Cajun, zydeco, waltzes and two-steps and swamp pop soul from Beau Jocque, Clifton Chenier, and Carol Fran. Plus an interview and live performance from younger traditionalists Cedric Watson and the late Chris Stafford on French Louisiana accordion and fiddle in Creole zydeco and Cajun music.
