The AI is Art campaign keeps adding new material. Are you familiar Jean-Michel Basquiat and they way he was put down as not a "real artist?" Makes no sense how you can be so influential in the art community and with other artists, yet not be an artist, but people often don't make sense. 🤷‍♂️

The latest ad in the AI is Art campaign takes a slightly different approach. Rather than looking at critics of a new art form, who attack the new for not being "real art," here is an example of inventors who could not see the potential of their new device to be a tool for making art; let alone art that could dominate much of the twentieth century in terms of its popularity and financial success.

People, even experts, are often quick to make harsh pronouncements that they present as facts when dealing with something new. Jazz — partly because it was innovative, partly because it was done by “Negroes” — was seen by so-called real musicians as not being music. It was something lesser, something to be dismissed or denounced. In the case of jazz, this criticism went on for decades.

In hindsight, those decrying and lamenting AI Art as not “real art” will look as foolish as those who once reflexively attacked Jazz.

Did you know that the term "impressionism" was coined as an insult, by a critic who argued that Claude Monet's work was too incomplete to be fully developed art? There are always those who decry the new and dismiss it. When will we learn that these people never get it right?

Art is about expression. And despite what the haters tell you, AI is Art, like Photography is Art, and Painting, even Impressionism, is Art.

Many people insist that AI is not comparable to the camera, and not art. But their arguments are very lacking in substance and fundamentally the same as the arguments that were leveled against photography when it was new. Critics don’t like it, see it as too easy, too mechanical, etc. They pretend as if there is no intentionality, no expression, no soul, etc. This is all about their comfort level with a new piece of technology. It is not, by any means, an objective fact.
