"Papyrus came out of a conscious community trying to transform themselves with the new knowledge of history and culture that has been hidden, or discredited, or just plain old missing from our experience here in the United States. We wanted to make sure our children had the knowledge of where we come from, and our history of culture. And so from there was a need saying, well, what kind of materials are we going to use to teach our children?"...

"What I want people, maybe beyond anything, to understand is that we, like poems, are capable of such complex juxtaposition and complication in our feelings towards things... And I know in an anti-Black world that is so good at hating us that there is a Black-loving world out there ... and in that Black-loving world that we can manifest everywhere will be a world of great, great hope and possibility where tomorrow is nourished."...

This is a book of awakening out of violence, guilt, shame, and critical pessimism to wonder and imagine how we can strive toward a new existence in a world that seems to be dissolving into desolate futures.

Ethel Ray Nance was born and raised in Duluth, Minnesota, where her family lived a life filled with marginalization, prejudice, and racism. She experienced constant comparison to whiteness—a place that held no space for her Black Southern father, William Henry Ray, or her white Swedish mother, Inga Ray. Ethel Ray: Living in the White, Gray, and Black is a biography and coming-of-age story of Ethel and of her family’s life before, during, and after the horrific lynching of three young Black circus workers—Elias Clayton, Elmer Jackson, and Isaac McGhie—on June 15, 1920....

"If we didn't have health inequities any longer, if everybody were getting the same amount of care, we'd still need to know this history, but it wouldn't be as urgent. I think the fact that Black women still experience disproportionately higher rates of maternal morbidity is relevant. We need to know why that is. We need to know why Black folks have higher incidence of heart disease, why Black people don't get good health care, even when they have health insurance, even when they are prosperous people."...
