The Mineral Point Boys and Girls basketball programs had their annual fundraiser on Friday, June 28th at Dodge-Point Country Club. The unique thing about this year’s fundraiser is that it was a great chance to congratulate both head basketball coach Dan Burreson and head golf coach Cory Sokol one more time on their state championship titles from this past school year, and a picture opportunity with the two of them holding championship trophies.
Despite Mother Nature delaying the golf event for an hour, 144 golfers hit the links at noon and were able to finish. Several other non-golfers joined as well and there were many items up for auction at this year's event.
The Democrat and The Chronicle covered the event so you can enjoy the video version here, or make sure you pick up one of the two papers this week for more coverage of the event.
Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) is a non-profit organization that provides hand-made single or bunk beds to children who don’t have a bed to sleep in. Founded in Idaho in 2012, SHP now has over 270 local chapters nationwide. There are 19 chapters in Wisconsin, with Grant County being one of them.
I interviewed the Co-President of Grant County’s program, Leon Neuheisel, on how SHP works in their county and the high demand for beds for kids. Neuheisel is spreading the word about SHP and hoping other counties will follow Grant County’s lead in building beds for kids who don’t have a bed to sleep in.
Neuheisel will be the guest speaker at the next Dodgeville Kiwanis Club meeting on Tuesday, July 9th beginning at Noon at Dodger Bowl to bring awareness. The presentation is free and open to the public.
The following story will give you a better understanding of how SHP works locally. You can also read the full story in this week’s Dodgeville Chronicle.
If you live in Grant County and have children ages 3-17, you may be eligible. To learn more visit www.shpbeds.org/chapter/wi-grant-co. On Facebook search for Sleep in Heavenly Peace – Grant County.
STATE CHAMPIONS!!
Pointer Nation was at it again, this time in golf. The fourth time was a charm for Mineral Point as the golf team returned to the State Tournament and won its first-ever State Tournament in Division 3 by twenty strokes over Chetek-Weyerhaeuser at Blackwolf Run playing the par 72 Meadow Valley course Tuesday.
After finishing second last year, and third the two years prior, the Pointer golf team broke through and claimed a gold championship ball for the second time this year, previously winning the state basketball championship in March.
The two-day, 36-hole event was shortened to 27 holes as rain hampered Monday’s round and only nine holes could be played. Drew Aschliman led the Pointers shooting a 27-hole total of 118. He also placed in the top six of the top individuals. Logan Weissinger of Durand-Arkansaw was Medalist shooting a 113.
Alex Ross was one stroke behind Aschliman shooting 119, Eli Lindsey shot 121, Reid Acherman 125, and senior Spencer Workman shot 136.
I was there to capture the moment so enjoy the sights, sounds, images, and interviews of Mineral Point’s State Championship!
Monday was Iowa County Youth Government Day at the Iowa County Courthouse as high school students from Iowa County had an opportunity to learn firsthand the different services the county offers.
Terry Cool, a History Teacher at Mineral Point, along with Iowa County Circuit Court Judge Matthew Allen explains the importance of this education for students in this video.
The Iowa County Veterans Group is at the heart of this program committed to educating local youth about government at the County level. 7 area Veterans were on hand for the event which was followed by a luncheon at the VFW hall.
Students were able to visit various county offices to learn about what those departments do. There was also a Mock Trial Team from Mineral Point who were able to get experience in a Courtroom with Judge Allen presiding.
The Dodgeville Chronicle and The Democrat was there to document this important educational day.

It was quite the game, and by now you should know the outcome of last night's thrilling come-from-behind win as the Mineral Point Pointers beat La Crosse Aquinas Blugolds 62-61 in a state semi-final game. The shot heard around Madison, Mineral Point, and the surrounding area around 9:55 p.m. Thursday night was Pointer Nation erupting after Landon Thousand's 3-point shot hit all net off an inbound pass from Alex Ross with six seconds left in the game to beat La Crosse Aquinas 62-61 in one of the best WIAA semi-final games you will ever see.
It was a crazy ending. The Pointers were down 61-54 with 1:09 left. Drew Aschliman drilled a 3-point shot making it 61-57. Alex Ross would steal an inbound pass and lay it in, and Point was down 61-59 with fifteen seconds left to play.
After a jump ball situation and the possession arrow in Mineral Point's favor, Dan Burreson called a time-out. The play they used wasn't used often this year, but tonight, it paid off!

The last time Mineral Point was at the state tournament was in 2015 and then, and now, Head Coach Dan Burreson will put their 26-2 record on the line against Aquinas. In 2015, Burreson’s team beat Auburndale 66-59 in the state semi-final to boost their record to 27-0. They met Whitefish Bay Dominican and 6’10” Diamond Stone and lost the championship game 75-49 and brought home the silver ball.
This 2024 team will be playing on the 50th anniversary of the 1974 Mineral Point team that also went to the state tournament. That team won its semi-final game against Prentice 67-62 but fell to McFarland 65-43 in the championship game and a silver ball. The 1934 team also fell short of a championship.
The 2024 version of the Pointers is a very experienced group with 8 seniors on the team. They’ve all been dreaming of a chance like this their entire childhood, and now that dream has a chance to become a reality this week as they prepare for their game Thursday night against Aquinas. I had a chance to visit the teams' practice on Monday to talk with Coach Burreson and his seniors about this close-knit group, Pointer Nation, and what it would be like to bring home the Gold Ball.
