Today, is in Wisconsin, declared by Gov. Tony Evers to mark the Wisconsin author’s 90th birthday and celebrate his lifetime of sharing Wisconsin stories and history with generations of readers. As Mark Twain did for life on the Mississippi, award-winning storyteller Jerry Apps has done for the Midwestern farm, its farmers, and its families. His more than 50 nonfiction and fiction books have found their way onto bedside tables from Arkansas to New York City and have improved our collective appreciation for the lessons we all can learn from harvesting, milking, chopping wood, and so much more!
Discover some of these lessons in the Little Creek Press book, “40 Days with Jerry Apps” by Pastor Jeff Wild who combines meditations with ’s stories from the farm, family, and small town. [All proceeds from their book benefit and the Network to support rural communities and farmers statewide.]

📣📚Shake Rag Alley Center for the Arts is excited to partner with the Mineral Point Public Library, Republic of Letters, Little Creek Press, and other regional educational, cultural, community, and historical organizations to consider questions of “Where We Live” with the support of an NEA Big Read/Arts Midwest grant in the amount of $20,000. Grant monies will directly enable comprehensive programming that engages the public in free events beginning in the fall of 2024.

Offerings will include book clubs, discussions and writing prompts in response to Kao Kalia Yang's memoir The Latehomecomer with its themes of migration, immigration, family stories, and identity, as well as a visit with Yang in Spring 2025. Little Creek Press and Shake Rag Alley will partner to publish an anthology of essays and nonfiction, sharing stories of community members and their relationships to their own family stories and histories, with a particular focus on personal history and identity, as well as the unique character of the Driftless region. The anthology launch and Yang’s visit are timed to coincide with Shake Rag Alley’s annual Mining Our Stories Writing Retreat in May 2025, with faculty Sheree L. Greer and a focus on memoir.

The Midwest Book Awards are presented by the Midwest Independent Publishers Association, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting independent publishers in the Midwest. The awards are open to all books published in the Midwest in the previous year.

MiPA founders organized the first Midwest Book Awards in 1989, and today the Midwest Book Awards is one of the longest running literary recognition programs in the country. Judges for the prestigious literary program are booksellers, university staff and librarians who are subject matter experts and collectively hail from each of MiPA’s twelve states.
