The Sandbar shark (Carcharhinus plumbeus) also commonly called the "brown shark" due its brownish-gray color. They are named after the sandy coastal habitat it resides in and are distinguished by their large, triangular dorsal fin and broad pectoral fins. Sandbar sharks can be found in the surf zone of the ocean and also within inlets and estuaries. They spend the majority of their time feeding on fish and crustaceans near the bottom of the ocean, swimming right above sandy substrate they effortlessly camouflage with. Sandbar sharks are some of the most frequently encountered shark species in New York coastal waters.

It is with an immense and deep sadness that today I share news of the tragic passing of our friend, Hempstead Town Councilman Christopher Carini. Councilman Carini was a dedicated public servant whose commitment to the communities he represented was unwavering. Before his time as an elected official, Chris was a decorated and proud veteran of law enforcement, serving for 22 years as a Police Officer in the New York City Police Department, MTA Police Department and Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Department.

But, above all, he was a proud and dedicated father to his two children, Joey and Ava, and a loving husband to his wife Danielle. The Town of Hempstead and its residents have suffered a great loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this unimaginably difficult time.

Visiting New York’s ocean beaches is a great way to cool off on hot summer days. The Atlantic Ocean is a part of a natural and wild coastal ecosystem and is home to a rich diversity of marine life, including multiple species of sharks.

Tomorrow is our kickoff to Shark Awareness Week. Check back all week as DEC celebrates the benefits of sharks in our waters and provide guidance on how to stay Shark Smart while enjoying marine waters this summer.
