The New Latino market is a beacon of hope, contributing to the rejuvenation of the US market.

Latino Newspapers Experience New Growth In This New Market

The Latino community already makes up a quarter of the US population; it's a significant demographic that is changing and growing. New arrivals from Guatemala, Peru, Venezuela, Columbia, and other Latino countries have given the Latino Market a rebirth - especially newspapers.

In many Latin American countries, Spanish-language newspapers still dominate the media market. Like a tradition from back home, many new arrivals rely on newspapers as their primary source of news and information.

The Latino market has emerged as one of the US's most culturally influential and economically engaged groups. With a rise in the popularity of Latin music and foods, many social media trends originating from Latino creators, and a range of products designed specifically for this market, US Latinos will become the next leading target audience for marketers.

The Latino Market has always been very lucrative. As the Latino population develops in the US, it is essential to recognize the Latino community from a business standpoint. Latinos are trendsetters.

New Latino-owned businesses have begun to sprout throughout Milwaukee and Southeastern Wisconsin. Puerto Rican, Nicaraguan, Venezuelan, and more are just some recent restaurants and other companies that have opened this year. Despite their country of origin, as this group comes together, they identify as Latino.

It's crucial to understand that the Latino population is internally diverse. This diversity brings enormous buying power and unique consumption and lifestyle qualities. Misunderstanding these could be a barrier to successful interaction with the group. For instance, a word like Latinx can have unintended consequences, as studies confirm that 98% of Latinos dislike it.

Latinos, proud of their heritage, country of origin, and achievements in the United States, embody a unique cultural duality. They are not just one or the other, but both, and they reward businesses that understand and respect this cultural fluency.

At El Conquistador Latino Newspaper, we understand this cultural duality. We live it. Latinos contact El Conquistador and request information, assistance, and guidance on a wide range of topics, from immigration issues to local events and businesses.

As Milwaukee's only Latino-owned newspaper, we proudly assist our community, which gives us an edge in the market. People recognize us as leaders and supporters in our community because we are part of it.

To learn more about the Latino Market and how El Conquistador can help you reach this dynamic market, call us at 414-383-1000 or email us at [email protected].

We look forward to helping you connect with our vibrant Latino community.

Christmas Day Double Homicide
Statement by Alderperson JoCasta Zamarripa
December 26, 2024

Yesterday, on Christmas morning, two teenagers were killed in a shooting in the Silver City neighborhood on Milwaukee’s near south side. Like all of us, I am outraged and heartbroken to hear of this terrible news, and my thoughts are with those grieving this loss.

Violence of this nature is always unacceptable, but I am especially outraged that this happened on Christmas morning. My constituents, and all residents across the city, deserve to have a holiday filled with peace and love, and it is devastating they were not afforded that opportunity.

I implore anyone who may have information about who committed this heinous act to please contact Milwaukee Police at (414) 935-7360, or to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at (414) 224-Tips or P3 Tips.

WWBIC Announces Search for New President Following Wendy K. Baumann's 31 Years of "Putting Dreams to Work"

The Wisconsin Women's Business Initiative Corporation (WWBIC) announces the search for a new President/Chief Visionary Officer (CVO). After three decades, Wendy K. Baumann is stepping down on February 14, 2025.

The WWBIC Board of Directors wishes to express immense gratitude and respect for Wendy’s leadership and dedication over the past three decades.

“Wendy has been at the heart of building WWBIC from a nascent nonprofit into a leading organization within Wisconsin’s economic development ecosystem," says Kate Hill, WWBIC Board Chair. "Her passion and vision of leveling the economic playing field helped thousands of individuals from underserved communities pursue their entrepreneurial dreams. We wish Wendy the very best as she pursues the next chapter of her professional journey.”

Over 30 years ago, Wendy walked into the lower level of the YWCA at 3112 Highland Blvd in Milwaukee to a converted cleaning closet to start her position as President/CVO. With one full time and one part time staff, Wendy rolled up her sleeves. She provided leadership required to ensure the achievement of WWBIC’s mission and to uphold the philosophy of serving businesses owned by women, people of color, Veterans and military spouses, and low to moderate income individuals in Wisconsin.

Wendy’s dream was to open doors of opportunity by providing underserved individuals who are interested in starting, strengthening, and expanding businesses with access to critical resources such as responsible financial products and quality business and financial training. Wendy’s dream has now turned into the leading statewide innovative economic development corporation, known as WWBIC.

Under Wendy’s leadership, WWBIC has grown to become a diverse team of 60 dedicated professionals with six regional offices and a Veterans Business Outreach Center that serves clients in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Minnesota. The organization serves with a $9 million operating budget and a $25 million loan portfolio. Wendy’s vision of providing access to capital coupled with technical assistance and one on one counseling has pushed WWBIC over peers by serving almost 80,000 individuals since its inception while serving almost 5,500 unduplicated clients annually.

In over 3 decades, WWBIC has created or retained over 25,000 jobs and started, strengthened, or expanded over 12,500 businesses. To serve all individuals, WWBIC provides the opportunity to pursue entrepreneurs’ dreams no matter what the challenges. In Wendy’s tenure, WWBIC has loaned over $130 million to small business owners. Wendy’s vision is to continue the work and dream bigger to gain worldwide exposure and work.

Wendy’s credentials, experiences, and genuine care for others have been vital in obtaining the objectives set for WWBIC in developing an innovative model for business assistance programming and small business development. Wendy believed in community and serving on numerous national and local boards including Association of Enterprise Opportunity, Association of Women’s Business Centers and the Opportunity Finance Network, Chair of Governor’s Council on Financial Literacy, CDFI Coalition, SBA Microloan Program, and many more.

Wendy has been recognized for her work by being named Wisconsin’s Most Influential Business Leaders, IB Madison Power 100, Marquette’s 2024 Transformational Leaders, Association for Enterprise Opportunity’s Impact Award for Innovation, 100 Milwaukee Area 2024 Power Broker, Professional Dimension’s Sacajawea Award, and many more!

The WWBIC board is focused on working closely with Wendy, its three continuing vice presidents, and key stakeholders to ensure that WWBIC’s mission and impact continues to meet the needs of our business communities. A national search will begin to recruit another outstanding leader with the passion, vision, and dedication to serve. Please join WWBIC in thanking Wendy for her leadership, commitment, and goodness for others over 31 years. She will be greatly missed!

City of Milwaukee to Explore Snowplow Fee Refund

Alderman Peter Burgelis, Alderwoman Sharlen Moore, Public Works Committee chair Alderman Robert J. Bauman, and Alderwoman Andrea M. Pratt have introduced a communication file for the Budget and Management Division, in collaboration with the City Comptroller and the Department of Public Works, that will explore the feasibility of refunding snowplow fees for residents who experienced poor or inadequate snow removal services. This communication file will be heard at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at City Hall during the next Public Works Committee meeting.

The proposed discussion comes in response to widespread concerns from residents following the city’s inability to properly clear four inches of snow on December 20, 2024. Many residents reported unsafe road conditions, and in some areas, lingering snow significantly impeded daily activities. Compounding frustrations, uncollected autumn leaves in several districts were scattered back onto residents’ lawns during snowplowing efforts.
“Milwaukee residents deserve reliable public services, especially during critical winter months,” said Alderman Peter Burgelis. “We have to be able to provide better services to our residents - if we can’t handle 4 inches of snow now, what’s going to happen later this winter? We’re f**ked!”

Alderwoman Moore added, “Major roads were great, but many neighborhood streets weren’t salted or plowed, and cold weather over the weekend made these neighborhoods slick and dangerous.”

The January 9 hearing will focus on evaluating mechanisms to provide a snowplow fee refund to some or all city residents. It will also address potential improvements to ensure timely and effective leaf collection and snow removal in the future.
