Representative Cruz Reacts to Governor Evers’ State of the State Address

MADISON, Wis – Today, Governor Tony Evers delivered his State of the State Address in the Wisconsin State Capitol, where he highlighted his vision for the next year.

Representative Cruz (D-Racine) released the following statement:

“I’m grateful for Governor Tony Evers’ leadership over these past six years, for Wisconsin wouldn’t be in such a strong position without it.

“This address highlighted the fact that Governor Evers has concrete plans to help working families make ends meet. Specifically, I am delighted to hear about his “Healthy Meals, Healthy Kids” initiative that aims to end school meal debt while providing healthy breakfast and lunch to all schoolchildren in Wisconsin.

“As I have said before, my history as a public school educator means that ensuring every single child is able to get a healthy school meal isn’t just good policy- it’s personal to me. I have seen firsthand what school meals being inaccessible and unaffordable can do to our children. Simply put, it’s hard to learn while having an empty stomach.

“Governor Evers declared 2025 the “Year of the Kid”, and I couldn't agree more. Whether it's by funding high-quality public education, providing healthy school meals for all, or eradicating gun violence in our schools, we have a moral obligation to serve our kids.

“Let’s get to work.”

Representative Angelina Cruz was elected in the 2024 general election. She represents the 62nd Assembly District, covering parts of Racine, Wind Point, North Bay, Caledonia, and Mount Pleasant.

She is the first Latina to represent Racine County in the Wisconsin Legislature. She is also president of Racine Educators United, Racine's teacher's union, since 2016.

AG Kaul, Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force Debunk Myths and Share Resources for Human Trafficking Awareness Month

MADISON, Wis. – January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month and brings an opportunity to raise awareness about the impact of human trafficking in Wisconsin and across the nation. The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Human Trafficking Initiative continues its work to make Wisconsin inhospitable to traffickers while advancing victim-centered strategies and partnerships statewide.

“By recognizing and reporting signs of human trafficking, people can help combat it,” said Attorney General Kaul. “We must continue raising awareness regarding this detestable crime.”

In recognition of Human Trafficking Awareness Month, the Wisconsin Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force (WAHTTF) and DOJ are working to promote education, address misconceptions, and provide vital resources for survivors, communities, and law enforcement throughout the state.

Myths vs. Facts: Understanding Human Trafficking

Myth: Human trafficking only happens outside the U.S., particularly in developing countries.
Fact: Human trafficking occurs in every state, including Wisconsin, affecting both adults and minors.

Myth: Traffickers generally target strangers.
Fact: Victims are often trafficked by someone they know, including romantic partners, family members, and employers, who use grooming tactics like emotional manipulation and false promises.

Myth: Victims of human trafficking come only from disadvantaged or vulnerable backgrounds.
Fact: Anyone can become a victim of trafficking. While some populations, including those facing abuse, homelessness, or poverty, may be at greater risk, trafficking can impact individuals from all walks of life.

Myth: All human trafficking involves s*x.
Fact: While s*x trafficking is a major issue, labor trafficking is also prevalent, affecting individuals in industries such as agriculture, hospitality, and domestic work.

Myth: Victims of trafficking are typically physically restrained and held against their will.
Fact: While some victims may be physically confined, traffickers often use psychological control through fear, manipulation, and threats to keep victims in their situation.
For additional facts and resources, visit the Department of Homeland Security Blue Campaign webpage.

How to Help

If you suspect trafficking, do not intervene directly. Instead, document as much information as possible and contact law enforcement immediately.

If you or someone you know needs immediate help, call 911. The National Human Trafficking Hotline also assists victims and accepts tips 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, at 1-888-373-7888. Other tiplines include the Blue Campaign Tip Hotline at 1-866-347-2423, and the National Center on Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) tipline at 1-800-843-5678.

For help finding a local service provider, reach out to the DOJ Office of Crime Victim Services or visit the service directories on DOJ’s human trafficking website at www.BeFreeWisconsin.com. You can also find local service providers at https://www.wcasa.org/survivors/service-providers/.

The Wisconsin Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force will be hosting a webinar on February 4, 2025, from 1:00pm to 3:00pm CST. Registration is open to members of the public who would like to learn more about s*x and labor trafficking, understand what human trafficking can look like, and how to connect survivors with resources here in Wisconsin. To register, visit: https://wisdoj.eventsair.com/human-trafficking-awareness-webinar/registration.

Police Leaders Condemn Pardons of January 6th Attackers

Statement by Sue Riseling, Chair,
Police Leaders for Community Safety

“Police Leaders for Community Safety strongly condemns the pardons of January 6 rioters who stormed the U.S. Capitol and attacked law enforcement officers on January 6, 2021.

“Americans must be able to participate in political rallies and peaceful protests, express their political views and exercise their right to vote without intimidation or physical harm. That’s the American way. But violence against our public institutions and our law enforcement officers is completely unacceptable.

“Those who commit such violence must be held accountable. Pardoning people who attacked our men and women in blue is an affront to the rule of law and to all those who put their lives on the line in service to our nation.

“These pardons condone lawlessness and undermine the rule of law — the foundation of our great democracy.

“They send a dangerous message that violence against public processes and law enforcement can be justifiable. It is not.”

Police Leaders for Community Safety is a nonpartisan national advocacy organization (501(c)4) established by prominent law enforcement leaders to promote policies and public investments that make our communities safer, improve the policing profession, protect public processes, and preserve human dignity.
