NATURE NEWS hosts Dan Lazar and Carlton Burke visited the NC Arboretum in Asheville, on July 29 and recorded their Saturday morning broadcast for July 31 as they walked about the grounds of the Arboretum near the Baker Center building and the adjacent Natural Gardens Trail. Some of the highlights and photos shared here include some yellowjacket nests they were dug out and destroyed by most likely hungry bears or skunks feeding on the yellowjacket grubs, pipevine swallowtail caterpillars feeding on pipevine planted along a trellis walkway by the Baker Center, recently hatched baby five-lined skinks and a hatchling fence lizard, rattlesnake plaintain, an amanita mushroom, crabapple tree with developing fruit, young sassafras berries, and more.

NATURE NEWS visited the Blue Wall Preserve in upstate South Carolina on July 14, 2021. This 575 acre preserve is open to the public and is managed by the Nature Conservancy. It is located at the base of the Blue Ridge Escarpment where the Piedmont region of North Carolina ends and the land begins to abruptly rise into the Appalachian Mountains. The Cherokee Indians once called the escarpment the Blue Wall. The escarpment due to its elevational changes and abundant rainfall, is considered to be one of the most ecologically important areas of the eastern United States. Despite a very hot day, we made many great discoveries of the various plants, animals, and scenery which make the Blue Wall Preserve so special. Here are some photos I took that day of some of our natural discoveries. Carlton Burke - NATURE NEWS
