1st Annual ASL World Championship
Where: Seven Springs Resort, Pennsylvania
When: World Boardgaming Championship
Dates: TENTATIVE! 1st Round Wednesday July 30th, Title Game: Sunday August 3rd 2025
The first ever ASL World Championship will be held at WBC, which begins July 26th and runs through August 3rd 2025.
The Tournament will kick off on Wednesday the 30th, and conclude with the match for the title on Sunday August 3rd. These dates are tentative due to the uncertainty of the number of participants. For a field of 63 or less there will be 6 rounds, at 64+ there will be 7 rounds.
The field will be sorted into an NCAA-type bracket system. The Championship bracket will be single elimination.
There will be multiple sub-brackets for players losing in the first three (as of now) rounds.
Players are going to be 'rated' as best as we can so the idea will be that the best players in the world will not meet in round 2, but much farther along. Top “seeds” will be separated into the four different brackets (8 people per “region” if there are 32, 16 if there are 64).
If we have rounds that end up with an odd number, which will be possible depending on total entrants, there will be “Bye” players, ASL players who are good enough to challenge winners in later rounds (They will be “filling” in so no players will get “byes”).
The format will be as follows:
7 Double Blind scenarios (or 6 depending on rounds) that no one will see, or play, prior to the beginning of the tournament. Players will all see the 1stround scenario prior to the beginning. These scenarios are being designed and tested by Pete Shelling and other VERY good players who will not be participants in the tournament.
The scenarios will truly allow us to crown a world champion as they will test players ASL skills across almost all “scenarios”. There will be DTO, PTO, Night, Combined arms and more. Each round will likely emphasize a particular set of ASL rules.
The players getting to the “Elite 8” or “Final 4” will be guys or gals who truly have a grasp of the depth and breadth of the ASL rulebook.
The prizes, which are not finalized yet, will include (AT LEAST!) the following:
Winner – MMP products for life, the ASL World Championship Trophy and your name, as the very first, on the World Championship Trophy to be stored in the ASL Hall of Fame
Runner up – ASL for life Runner up Trophy
Third Place – MMP for one year 3rd place Trophy
Fourth Place – ASL for one year 4th place Trophy
Other prizes will include, but not be limited to, ASL, MMP products of your choice, entry fees to sanctioned ASL tournaments, awards for most Box Cars, Snake Eyes, Heroes generated, a Sportsmanship award voted on by the players in attendance, multiple players (of some the best players known) have donated a “Lesson”. A 1-hour “mentor” lesson (via VASL) to players qualifying for the prize. There will be more but for now we hope this list is enticing enough.
IMPORTANT NOTE! The tournament will feature a “Main Event” table. The game being played at that table will be broadcast live AND commentated on by Brian Youse and Curt Schilling as well as potential “guests”. The Title game will be played at the main table with audio and video broadcast to the world. Details will follow.
ASL has been absent from WBC for far too long. Its place in wargaming and boardgaming history is concrete and earned, we felt it was absolutely time to put it back on the 'table' so to speak, and have it represented, along with the ASLSK tournament that Perry has been running for years.
Details will be forthcoming, but for now if you are not signed up for WBC you can do so here:[https://www.boardgamers.org/wbcindex.html](https://www.boardgamers.org/wbcindex.html)
There is no entry fee beyond the one for WBC, to enter this tournament. We will absolutely adhere to their rules and allow players to join, up to the tournaments beginning, but at the same time would implore anyone wishing to participate to sign up early to allow us the best and fairest possible chance to create the brackets and set up the tournament. A last minute attendee is more than welcome but we would really like to have the tournament attendees and participants known beforehand due to the fact that the number participating will directly impact the potential day/time the tournament begins.
We are finalizing all details as we speak and when we complete this task the “Registration” for the ASL tournament will go up on the official MMP website with the process on how you can be a part of this.
We are very fired up and excited about the event. The response at Winter Offensive was far more exciting than even we expected and we hope to be able to meet the 32 number in short order to ensure a truly worthy event to crown the first ever World Champion. The other hope was that announcing now would allow our friends across the “ponds” time to make plans should they choose to attend. We know there are some world class players all over the globe and hope to see their faces in July!
