(GaWxNet, 1/10/2025, 6:00 pm Update)
From now until about 11 pm, North Georgia will be in the critical period in terms of the freezing rain and icing impacts. Temperatures will not move very much tonight. Locations at or just below freezing will be our main areas of concern. Temperatures in the mid-levels of the atmosphere will remain slightly warmer than the surface. Precipitation over North Central, Northeast Georgia as well as a portion of Northwest Georgia along the I-59 corridor will fall as rain. But with surface temperatures at or below freezing, this will cause that precipitation to freeze on contact. Freezing rain is the most destructive precipitation type as it creates icy roads and brings down trees and powerlines. The conditions remain especially favorable for freezing rain and excessive ice buildup in the Lake Lanier/Gainesville area. The models are now pushing ice accumulations in excess of a quarter of an inch in this area.

As of 6 pm, there are about 70,000 customers without power across the state. That number is expected to rise through the late night and overnight hours.

A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for all of North Georgia and portions of Middle Georgia until Saturday morning. Please stay off the roadways tonight!

Officers have checked most of the roads in the city, and all appear to be in good condition, with a few places that do have ice accumulation but have been treated by the road department. However, outside of the city on the north end of the county, there are reports of ice on the roadways in some areas.

With more rain on the way, and to help all first responders, please refrain from traveling on the roadways unless it is absolutely necessary.

Please call our dispatch at 478-414-4090 to report any hazardous road conditions.

If you have any friends or family, mainly elderly and handicapped, who need assistance throughout this weather event, please don’t hesitate to give us a call, and we will be happy to assist them.

With temperatures hovering right around the freezing mark in North Georgia, there are several variables determining our precipitation rate and type. This has put the weather models into overdrive! The snowfall estimates have been bumped back up again, with most (not all) of the snow still north of I-20. Keep in mind, the snow is expected to switch to a mix and to rain in areas. Temperatures will fall below freezing in North and Middle Georgia tonight creating significant travel hazards. Stay off the roads if at all possible today through tomorrow morning!

(GaWxNet, 1/10/2025, 6:00 am)
The wintry mix of precipitation has arrived in parts of North and Middle Georgia. We are mainly seeing sleet with some light snow showers. This wintry mix will continue through the day today above I-20, but switch mainly to rain south of I-20 by noon. The latest forecast models have shifted the snow line north and the ice line south. The most significant snowfall will be mainly in the North Georgia Mountains. Ice accumulation above 0.10" is possible as far south as Carrollton to Macon to Augusta. A more significant ice threat remains around the Lake Lanier/Gainesville area. Freezing rain this afternoon and evening is also very possible along the I-85 corridor in Northeast Georgia.

A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for all of North Georgia and portions of Middle Georgia until 7 am Saturday.

** The Winter Storm Warning for all of North Georgia and parts of Middle Georgia will now go into effect at 5 am Friday morning. **

A mix of multiple winter precipitation types are expected. Total snow and sleet accumulations up to 3 inches and ice accumulations up to one third of an inch are possible.

Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Significant ice accumulation on power lines and tree limbs may cause widespread and long-lasting power outages. Power outages and tree damage are likely due to the ice. Travel could be nearly impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the Friday morning and evening commutes.

Ice accumulations have been increased across portions of the I-20 and I-85 corridors. Additional changes to ice and snow amounts are possible with future forecast updates.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. The latest road conditions for the state you are calling from can be obtained by calling 5 1 1.

Persons should consider delaying all travel. Motorists should use extreme caution if travel is absolutely necessary.

Out of an abundance of caution and with the safety of our students, parents, faculty, and staff as our top priority, Georgia Military College will be closed on Friday, January 10, due to the severe weather forecast. This includes Main Campus, Prep School, and all satellite locations.

The forecast predicts dangerous conditions, including freezing temperatures, icy roadways, and potential power outages, which could affect travel during commute times. With our service area spanning multiple counties expected to be impacted by the winter storm, this precautionary measure is necessary to ensure the safety of all.
Please monitor local and state travel advisories closely over the next few days, as weather patterns may shift. We encourage everyone to take all necessary precautions and prioritize safety during this time.

Campus operations and classes are scheduled to resume as normal on Monday, January 13.

Stay safe, stay warm, and we look forward to seeing everyone back on Monday!
