Join Fall Line Press this Saturday at 2pm for an opening exhibition of PRIORITY MAGIC by John Pilson (), a series of photographic collage diptychs that began in 2020.

Pilson writes: “The work on the wall was all made on a smartphone, often in sustained daylong bursts, in front of a TV, usually without pants on, and always posted immediately to Instagram upon completion. In simplest terms, they are an exercise in pattern recognition and real-time visual response to the daily apparitions and 24-Hour News Cycle interpretations of actions and consequences emanating from The Trump White House.”

John Pilson is an artist based in New York City. His work is held in the public collections of The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The New York Public Library, New York; Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Hamburger Kunsthalle, Hamburg; MG+MSUM Moderna Galerija, Ljubljana; and FNAC, France.

The photographs in 101 Pennies are multi-format: 35mm, medium format, digital. Each “penny” is brought to life through traditional darkroom processing, in which plates are based upon an enlarged negative, hand-processed, and sepia-toned by the artist. Several “pennies” are composited from overlays, showcasing the overlapping nature of the stories within the series.

Hello again from Peter Essick, the photographer of Work in Progress.

This photo of a construction site was used as the back endpaper to the book. The endpapers are the opposite side of the front and back covers. Sometimes they are just blank and their use is to hold the book block to the cover with glue. However, it is possible to print a photo on the endpaper and this is the one we choose. After looking at the whole book, we ask the reader/viewer to ponder this photo.

I took the photo, but to be truthful I don’t know exactly what was going on. Why would there be these tracks going in circular patterns? Usually one sees straight lines at a construction site or at least a defined road. Perhaps there is a reason the gray gravel mounds are placed where they are, but it looks pretty random to me. I believe some of the best photography is open to interpretation which makes this photo a great way to end.

Work in Progress, the book of drone photos of construction sites is available for preorder at the link in the bio.

Hello again from photographer Peter Essick

Most abstract images using a photographic process are made in the studio. To capture a purely abstract photo in the field is difficult, but this image from the Work in Progress book comes close. What I like about many of the photos I have taken of construction sites is that they appear abstract from a distance, but upon closer inspection one can see tracks, footprints, a shovel, or some other identifiable object.

All photographs are open to interpretation, but abstract images tend to point even more in this direction. I enjoy trying to make photographs that can evoke different meanings in viewers.

The book, “Work in Progress,” is available for preorder at the link in the bio.

Hello from Peter Essick , a photographer based in Stone Mountain, Georgia. I have a new book being published by Fall Line Press titled “Work in Progress” and will be taking over the Fall Line instagram feed this week.

The book is a unique collection of aerial photos of construction sites around Atlanta. I have tried to use the new drone technology to document the rise in housing developments happening in our region. Throughout the history of photography, technological advances have helped photographers produce work that has never been done before. This has happened with the invention of roll film, the 35mm camera, color film, digital capture, and many other smaller advancements. I see the drone as a revolution in aerial photography.

The book can be preordered at kickstarter.com, search “Work in Progress” and at the link in bio.

Hey guys. here with my last Fall Line IG post. One theme of my new book Perpetual Care is how America has failed to take care of its citizens who are on periphery. The wealth gap has significantly increased in last 40 years in part because of trickle down economics policy that gained widespread use under President Regan (pic 2) in 1980s. Book avail for purchase in bio. Thanks for looking. Clay
