The Millbury Sutton Chronicle joins with the Sutton community in sympathy with the family and friends of a four-year-old girl who drowned in a neighbor’s pool on July 11. The Worcester District Attorney’s office released the statement below.
“At 3:50 p.m. Thursday, the Sutton Police Department received a 911 call reporting a 4-year-old girl had gone missing from her home. A short time later, the girl was found in a neighbor’s pool, unresponsive. Emergency personnel transported her to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester where she was pronounced deceased.”
Sutton Police posted that they were no longer seeking the public’s help with the search for the girl within hours after the search began on July 11. Earlier postings on social media stated that the young girl’s name was Eva, that she was autistic, and that the search was in the area of Peach Tree Drive.
Sutton Police called in District 7’s Critical Incident Management System staff and Medway PD’s comfort dog, Moose, to support Sutton staff after the incident.

Jill Kozaczka wins one of two seats on school committee as write-in
Incumbent Benjamin Gibbons re-elected

SUTTON — Write-in candidate Jill Kozaczka, a retired Sutton teacher, has earned the greatest number of votes in the town election and will take a seat on the school committee. Kozaczka won 980 votes.
Incumbent Benjamin Gibbons, who has occupied the chair’s seat on the committee through a turbulent spring, also earned a seat, winning 953 votes.
Incumbent Paul Brennan came in third with 565 votes, not enough to keep his seat on the committee.
Challenger Matthew Gautreau, who took out nomination papers this spring, came in fourth with 389 votes, while write-in candidate Amy Levins earned 194 votes.
There were 197 blank votes and 22 other write ins.
1650 voters turned out for the election.
There were no other contested seats on the spring election ballot. Incumbents Jonathan Anderson and Jesse Limanek were re-elected to the select board.
The Millbury Sutton Chronicle is reaching out to candidates for their comments and will update this story as comments are received.

Unofficial results give Lazzaro and McKenna the win for select board seats

Former school committee member Nicholas Lazzaro and incumbent Katherine McKenna easily won three-year seats on the select board against three challengers at the April 30 town election, according to unofficial results.
Lazzaro was the top vote getter with 620 votes, followed by McKenna with 532; challengers Daniel Jakes (184 votes), Francis DeSimone (156 votes) and Amy Paquette-Riordan (144 votes) fell far behind. No write-in information was available at this writing, though about 19 write-in votes were cast for select board.
Incumbent Christopher Wilbur (620 votes) and Kristen M. Birch (518 votes), who served as an appointee, won the three-year seats available on the school committee, while challenger Sean Michael Cooper earned 326 votes.
Incumbents Francis DeSimone (599 votes) and Paul A. Piktelis (542 votes) earned three-year seats on the planning board against Terry Burke Dotson with 369 votes.
Two seats with no candidates remain up in the air: no write-in votes for Town Moderator were cast, and information is not yet available on the results of 242 write-in votes for a one-year term available on the school committee.
The Chronicle will publish the official vote tallies when available.

Second bomb threat made to Sutton High April 15

SUTTON — Sutton Police reported on their page that they had responded to the second bomb threat in ten days on Monday, April 15 after a one-line email was sent to the school’s administration.

Sutton Police were alerted to the threat at 5 a.m. The threat comes as the school’s students are on April vacation.

Police said on Monday that they had conducted an investigation and “did not locate anything out of the ordinary.”

“It goes beyond disappointment that a person or people would choose this course of action as a way to make a statement,” said Sutton School Superintendent Kim Roberts-Morandi. “Threats are inexcusable.”

The bomb threat on April 5 was also received in an email and included threats to Millbury’s elementary schools, Elmwood and Shaw.

While the April 5 bomb threats are still under investigation, police believe they may be part of the outpouring of hate and harassment following the ConCon event.

“We believe that whoever was responsible for the bomb threat at the school [April 5] may have been unhappy with recent events held at the school during the Connections Conference,” Sutton Police Chief Dennis Towle said.

Roberts-Morandi said she had no knowledge of the initiating source for the threat or how it was related to the previous threat, but that the school department would support the police in their efforts any way they could.

Clark chosen as new Millbury Town Manager
First woman to serve in that post
MILLBURY — Miillbury resident Karyn E. Clark, the deputy town manager since August 2023, was chosen by the select board to become the new town manager, after less than fifteen minutes of deliberation at their February 13 meeting.
Clark was one of two candidates interviewed by the board at their February 8 meeting, including April Steward, the current town administrator in the town of Boylston. Geoffrey Kravitz, the current Sunderland Town Administrator, was the third candidate that was chosen by the screening committee as a finalist, but he removed his name from consideration before the interviews.
Select board members stated that this is the third time they’ve participated in the town manager selection process in recent years, and expressed a firm preference for the continuity that Clark’s appointment will bring. Clark has been the interim town manager since the abrupt departure of Town Manager Sean Hendricks in August 2023. Hendricks replaced David J. Marciello, who had been in the position since 2017, and departed before his contract ended in 2020.
“Sometimes change is good, but I think we’ve had too much change in the town manager’s office,” board chair Christopher Naff said.
Board members were also united in the belief that both candidates were strong contenders for the position.
“So, this is not the easiest choice, but I feel we’re in a great situation to have this choice,” select board member Katherine McKenna said.
Several applauded Steward as well. Select board member Brian Sora praised her for her “perseverance, adaptability and resilience.”
“I think the town of Boylston is very lucky to have Miss Steward,” Naff said.
All select board members praised Clark and her abilities as well as her suitability to work with the staff at town hall.
“A lot of town employees showed up here on the night of the interviews, and I think that was in support of Karyn,” vice chair Scott Despres said.
Despres also praised Clark for stepping up when Hendricks left the position and for her skill during recent union negotiations.
Clark said she was excited and proud to be chosen.
“This is absolutely the highlight of my professional career,” she said.
“I am the first female town manager Millbury has had and I am incredibly proud of that.”
Clark praised the board and the town employees, who she said were very helpful and supportive when she came to work for the town and took over from Hendricks.
