Sometimes you write a song in England with your friends and it ends up becoming popular in the United States and it gets stuck in the head of a kid in Milford, Delaware. Thanks, Elastica for the ear worm that I will love forever.

This is a Martin D18 showcased at the Martin Factory Museum in Nazareth, PA. The guitar was owned by Kurt Cobain around the time of Nevermind and was later owned by Elliott Smith. I visited the factory and the museum today. It was an honor to see it in-person.

The young man on the right was raised by a single mother, suffered from depression, and dropped out of high school. Thankfully, his mother purchased him a snare drum which led to him picking up the drums which brought him out of his debilitating funk he was experiencing. In his early adulthood, he had a few jobs as a busboy, dishwasher, and a sous-chef before diving full-time into music. Chris pictured on the far right was in a couple bands behind the drumset before he starting playing with his friends Hiro and Kim. Eventually, Chris made his way to the lead singer position and became one of the most talented singers in rock history. His band, Soundgarden, became a staple on rock radio throughout the 90s and his other band, Audioslave, did very well in the 00s. Sometimes, a simple musical instrument can save us from our dark times and carry us through. RIP Chris Cornell.

This guy was born in a rural town of Bakersfield, California. Struggling to find his place in high school and an affinity for the darker side of life led to assist in a funeral home. He began his formal education after high school to become a professional embalmer but decided to pursue music with his band instead. Years later, Jonathan Davis and his band Korn would go on to become one of the most successful bands in the 90s. Everyone has a story.

This teen from Mercer, Pennsylvania played tenor saxophone and tuba in the Mercer High School marching band. He also learned to play piano, keyboards, and synthesizers. After college he moved to Cleveland, Ohio. He joined a few bands in his early 20s and then decided to compose/perform/record his own music under a name called Nine Inch Nails. Trent Reznor is now in the rock and roll hall of fame and is now a highly accredited film composer. There is no straight path.

This bright-eyed teenager was a tennis sensation in Europe. Following in his Father’s footsteps, he was set to become the next big tennis star. After the family moved to Southern California to further pursue the tennis dream, the family quickly realized that the kid did not have the skills necessary to become the next big thing. Undeterred, the motivated teenager followed his next passion: metal music. He put an ad out in the Recycler, a local magazine, seeking local metal heads and received a response from a like-minded teenager named James. Lars and James would go on to form the most successful metal group of all-time called Metallica. Thankfully for us, his tennis dreams didn’t pan out.

This military brat named Jim lived all across the country the 50s and 60s. His father was an Admiral in the Navy during the start of the Vietnam war. This clean-cut student was a normal kid until he became obsessed with mythology, philosophy, and poetry. Eventually, he left Florida State University to attend UCLA. There, he met a fellow film student named Ray. They went on to form The Doors. There is no straight path in life. Break on Through…

This boy was born in Tanzania and emigrated to England in the 1960s. He loved playing piano and collecting stamps. After graduating from college, he joined up with a band called Smile. That band would become Queen and would become one of the most successful rock acts in history. The path isn’t a straight line. It’s different for everyone.

This metal head was an outcast. He was a stranger in a strange land when he grew up in Illinois and when he went to college at Harvard University. It wasn’t until he arrived in Los Angeles that he found his people and his voice. Timing and people are important. The man with the explorer is Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave.

This kid wearing the Ace Frehley and the knockoff Les Paul was just a huge Kiss fan from Texas. He and his brother formed a cover band in the early 80s. They had dreams of making it big and were determined. After nearly ten years of performing live, releasing a couple of independent albums, and grinding, they released an album on ATCO records called “Cowboys from Hell”. Within 15 months of releasing Cowboys from Hell, Pantera opened up for Metallica and AC/DC to nearly a million people in Moscow on September 28, 1991. Keep grinding that axe.

Before becoming the most rad bass player of the 20th century, Flea was a jazz and trumpet enthusiast from Los Angeles. He picked up the bass as a suggestion by his friend, Hillel Slovak, and the world was never the same. We all start somewhere. Encourage someone to play. They might be as special as Flea.

This guy worked as a machinist at the Precision Tool Company prior to recording a ballad for his mother at Sun Recording Studios in Memphis. He was also a truck driver. He was a normal person who grew up in a poor part of Mississippi. He was a normal guy before he became a “King”.

Before he composed a songbook that eclipsed all other artists of his time, he was just a small town guy with a guitar, harmonica, and a voice. They all started somewhere.
