The Eternal shelf live of honey. When archeologists were excavating the tombs of the Kings of Egypt. They found clay urns with an unknown hard substance in them. It was later identified as yes, HONEY. Most of these urns of honey were over 3,000 years old and due to crystallization, were very hard. The Smithsonian Magazine has published a detailed account of this discovery and how they put the aged honey to the test. After their scientific testing, they concluded that the 3,000 year old honey was still edible and coined honey the "Eternal Food".

All of the professional beekeepers that I know, (professional meaning one who makes their living from keeping bees). Are out of bed very early in the morning, planning & preparing their day's activity. This is also known as commercial beekeeping. When you have to pay your rent or bills from the fruit of your beekeeping activity, beekeeping takes on another dimension. I assume, one could make this case on most hobbies, like fishing, golfing, playing tennis etc. The transition from keeping bees for a hobby and quitting your day job to become a full time beekeeper is a major commitment and unfortunately not always a wise one because if your skill level is not sufficient, I think you get the picture.

There is much more work to beekeeping than meets the eye and the sweetness of it all is that you will get stung on a regular basis. I have roughly added up that my number of stings over the years comes to about 9,531 and counting. (give or take a few) Some stings, hurt a bit and there are some that you will never forget but I will take a bee sting, any day over a chigger bite.

Hello friends & followers of Hosey Honey.
Mastering the art of beekeeping is a challenge that resonates to the core of your being. After almost 50 years of working & playing with honeybees, I believe I have learned the basics of beekeeping, it has not been easy but through stubbornness & the shear desire to succeed in learning the art of beekeeping, somewhere in that process, another set of skills develop into a knowing of when, where and what to do. It is something that can be shown through technique, but this skill of knowing, appears to develop as the beekeeper goes through one's daily chores of taking care of honeybees as it is written in the many hundreds of books on the subject. The colony of honeybees is a being just as a tree, animal or human and they do have personalities and like us (humans) have good days and bad days. A seasoned beekeeper knows this and if possible chooses the "good days" to work with the bees. In the end, the bees are the teachers and they teach us how to deal with them, and if you do not bring your "A" game in body, mind & soul, they will let you know very quickly, who the teacher is. If you do not believe this than try it out yourself, but I suggest to make it interesting, do it only with a bee veil on and leave your other protective clothing in your vehicle that day.

There is no other creature like honeybees on earth and without them it appears most all the creatures on planet earth would suffer beyond comprehension. So, beekeeping is a noble art and one that is extremely important to life on earth. Next time you take a bite of fruit, remember a honeybee, through pollination, was partially responsible for its creation. How important are bees?
Let me ask the question like this. How important is food to your survival and the survival of every living thing on this earth. Bees are responsible for pollinating more then 80 percent of all flowering plants. Without bees 1 out of every 3 meals will be gone and in total bees ecological impact is estimated at 200 Billion a year that’s billion with a B! With the worlds food crisis already so bad this would be devastating and only the start. So what can we do? Just for starters not spraying our lawns with chemicals, letting wild flowers grow and being conscious that every thing we build or land we clear is one less piece of land for bees to live is a great start! I had a great time meeting Richard Hosey and talking all about bees. He is full of the knowledge needed to reverse the damage people have done to bees and I look forward to working and learning from him in the future. Hosey Honey
