Driver’s Seat
Driver’s Seat is the perfect reflection of the good old days. This old truck is the perfect reminder of times past but not forgotten. Window down, no air-conditioning. The wear and tear of the elements have only added to the character. Even though this truck is sitting off to the side, it could just as easily be the old rancher’s truck as he is riding lease roads to feed the cows and make sure no one is speeding. It is a reminder of those who have survived out here through boom and bust.
Those who have worked the land and found a way to make it work through the lean times. Those that would keep driving that old truck because it’s dependable and it’s paid for. It is a tip of the hat to the way things once were and the way some things still are. It’s a friendly wave at the person passing by you on the road. There aren’t many left cut from the same mold as he is, but they were a good group of great men. As he looks out across his land, where the rigs are stacked up, realizing that he is finally sitting in the Driver’s Seat.

The Art of the Oil and Gas Industry
Texas skies are the most magnificent and awe-inspiring on Earth. Texas lands are so flat and extensive, one can marvel at the full magnitude of the skies, as far as their vision allows. In my years, I’ve had the absolute pleasure of witnessing many extraordinary, Texan, skies, each as remarkable as the next. In this photo I wanted to share a bit of that brilliance.
During one ‘Indian Summer’ night where the unseasonably warm weather invited me out, I was greeted by a vibrant, color, pallet in the sky. Right above the horizon, the atmosphere was painted in fiery reds, energetic oranges, and electric yellows, setting the sky ablaze.
Finally, the sky boldly bled into darker hues of cobalt blue and magenta with hints of coral. The illustrated sky, provided a particularly energetic backdrop, to this oil field where oil rigs were scattered over the multi-toned earth. I like the contrast between natural and mechanical worlds in this picture. It gives to the idea that we need the mechanical aspect to pull out valuable natural resources.

This image, Solitude, proves there is so much beauty to find in the West Texas Oilfield. Just like this rig standing alone against a vibrant sunset. Whether it is the amazing sky or the rustic colors of time passing you can find it around every corner. Some of my favorite discoveries when I'm out doing freelance work are often locations others drive by. Places people pass without stopping to take it in. The everyday places and everyday scenery in their perfect simplicity. Often the inspiration is the colors of the sky or the contrast of soft and hard, industrial, surfaces. Textures and shadows play off the light on certain objects. As well as the changes in the weather that tend to lend an amazing spectacle like a rig standing alone against a big sky. Often, as vivid as it is when I close my eyes and remember the feeling that inspires each shot.

DARE TO DREAM
Our dreams come to us at night interrupting our sleep or during the day daring us to grow. In Midland TX, we Dare to Dream of being at the top of the oil and gas industry where everyone feels its success rain down. The oilfield is the driving force of Midland’s ideas, imagination, and desires. Yearning for fruition in the form of a booming economy with successful citizens. The oil derrick appears almost like a ladder reaching high up to the sky allowing all to climb towards success. In this image, dreams are not mere idealizations, but instead life realities. A man can stand proud knowing he is working hard to support his family which in turn furthers their ability to imagine.
In this image, the field of dreams is not a game, but land that gives back to its people. An industry that opens doors so one might continue to Dare to Dream as their abilities and desires grow. One might look up from the ground and see the impossible while Midland looks up and knows it can be done. The clouds in the background almost appear to be the smoke from an explosion; it is as if the oil derrick stands tall through destruction. The colors in this image cause one to focus on the oil derrick and how tall it stands in all of its glory. Here is proof that hard work develops dreams into reality. That reality only leads us to Dare to Dream, bigger and better dreams!

Oil, Energy, Land, and Sky
Garth Brooks sings it loud and clear, “The thunder rolls and the lightnin’ strikes”. In the image, Oil Energy Land and Sky, the oil field plays the role of the mistress. Because for many of the men and women in the oil, and gas, industry, as she keeps them out in the storm and far from home. The oil patch requires long hours of dedication spent away from their families and friends in all types of weather. This ‘relationship’ is truly a demonstration of the love, and devotion, our oil field workers have for their families. As this area of employment allows them to support their households. However, there is a sacrifice, they must make to survive in this industry. She rewards those who can face a little thunder and lightning and yet finish the job.
No storm, cold, heat, or any other elements, mother nature, can dish out will keep these men and women from building their oilfield career. First, the lightning, in this image, demonstrates a strong level of energy hitting the ground all around the oil site. Then the strength, of the lightning, is parallel to the strength of the oil field. They seem to stand side by side. Finally, it is as if the lightning is coming from the ground; that the energy is actually coming from the oil itself. This energy is what drives West Texas, to be the leading player in the oil industry. In this case, the player is willing to weather the storm, to build an economy. Of course, this community can be proud that she continues to demand the best. Because out here, Oil Energy Land and Sky is the quest of every man and woman.
