A stream of about 80 vehicles proceeded northbound on Route 22A through Orwell around 8 a.m. Friday morning in honor of David “Chris” Maland, a U.S. Border Patrol agent who was killed in the line of duty on Monday. The convoy included first response vehicles of many kinds, including fire trucks, as well as civilian vehicles. A rescue helicopter flew above the procession. This show of support came after a motorcade of around 200 vehicles escorted Maland’s body as it was moved from the Chief Medical Examiner’s office in Burlington to a funeral home on Thursday.

Bristol's Payton Jones, who suffered a cardiac arrest during a swim meet when she was 11, is among a group of Vermonters and organizations supporting legislation that would require schools and athletic events to have cardiac emergency response plans in place so they’re prepared to respond to such emergencies.

When it comes to responding to a cardiac arrest, Bristol resident Payton Jones knows firsthand how having the right people and resources nearby can mean the difference between life and death.

Based on local service-providers’ data, there were 156 homeless people in Addison County last year, of which 41 were children. This data doesn’t include all unhoused people and doesn’t acknowledge those at risk of becoming homeless.

“The facts are discouraging,” said Heidi Lacey, executive director of the Charter House.

Frigid temperatures and the recent removal of Middlebury’s largest encampment behind the Ilsley Library has temporarily made homelessness more of an unseen problem in the county’s shire town. So where did the folks go?

Vergennes officers worked with American Legion Post 14 to surprise the Tembreulls with a new flag after their former flag — which they had flown for six years in honor of Tracy Tembreull’s brother, a Purple Heart veteran who took his own life — was stolen from their Vergennes home on New Year’s Eve.

Vergennes Police Sergeant Adam O’Neill knew quickly on New Year’s Eve that the woman calling the station was upset. City homeowner Tracy Tembreull was reporting the theft of an item from her family’s South Maple Street front porch. It was an item that in one way could be replaced for just $30 ...

Words can also only capture so much of what happens on the field and the trails and in the gym. That’s why we send Steve James and his cameras and lenses along.

Now is the time to help out. HOPE needs food donations — in addition to holiday shop donations — now more than ever.

“Calls for food and other assistance rise during the third quarter of each year, and we will be challenged to meet them,” Jeanne Montross stated in an October letter to prospective donors. “Food prices, which rose during the pandemic, have remained very high, and so we will not only need to purchase more food, that food will now cost twice what it did just two years ago.”

Adding to the problem: There’s no longer a food donation bin at Middlebury’s Hannaford supermarket, though the Hare and the Dog liquor store next door has agreed to host one, according to Montross. She said food shelves like HOPE’s have fewer sources from which to harvest free provisions.

“We have to pay for more of what used to be available for free, and many items are just not available,” she said.

As the same time that Helping Overcome Poverty’s Effects (HOPE) is fielding a growing number of requests for food, clothing and other necessities, the Middlebury nonprofit is also readying its annual Holiday Shop and food boxes to ensure area folks in need have a joyful Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Our Story

The Addison Independent was founded in 1946 with the closing of the Middlebury Register. The AI has always been a family-owned independent newspaper. Current publisher/editor Angelo Lynn has been at the helm for more than 20 years. The Addison Independent is as much a part of the local community as many of the institutions covered on the front page. Being a community newspaper means that the AI's award-winning editorial staff covers local events in a way that's different from a large metropolitan or regional daily. The aim is to tell readers about their friends and neighbors and about events in local government, schools, sports and business that affect how readers live. The AI also provides readers everything they need to know about local entertainment and events. Just a note: A like isn't an endorsement — we just want to know what you're up to!
