Renovations lift old library into new apartments

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. – The original Michigan City Public Library turns a page as the ribbon is cut on the three-year renovation project.

The refreshed Casa del Libri features five new, luxury apartments at Eighth and Spring Streets in the Elston Grove Historic Neighborhood. The building highlights its historic roots, including a 12-foot-high Tiffany-style-stained glass window depicting the Shakespearean figures Rosalind, Portia and Ophelia.

“I think the biggest impact of the project is the fact that the library was opened to the public in 1897 as a pillar in the rich history of Michigan City. It has sat effectively vacant since the art center moved out decades ago,” said Bernie DelGiorno, who spearheaded the renovation. “By transforming the property into residential apartments, it revitalizes a once-forgotten work of art that can now be enjoyed by full-time Michigan City residents.”

The structure, of Indiana limestone, originally opened to the public on Oct. 9, 1897, as the first city library. The construction of the original building was funded by residents and propelled forward by a grant challenge issued by John H. Barker. The total cost was $30,000.

“Reviving the former library into livable space truly bridges the past and the future as we honor our city’s foundation with new housing options,” said Economic Development Corporation Michigan City Executive Director Clarence L. Hulse. “Casa del Libri or ‘house of books’ encompasses a celebration of history along with a modern vibe for luxury apartment living.”

“We look forward to creating a unique community of residents all living under one historic roof,” DelGiorno added.

Shirley Heinze Land Trust Awarded $1M Grant

Shirley Heinze Land Trust has announced a new initiative funded by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation's (NFWF) National Coastal Resilience Fund. The project, slated to begin in the spring of 2025 and continue through the spring of 2028, will focus on enhancing climate resilience in the Calumet Region, which spans the Indiana-Illinois border.

Shirley Heinze will be collaborating with several key conservation organizations from the Calumet Land Conservation Partnership that are involved in conservation and community engagement across the Calumet region. This collaborative effort will engage coastal communities in building capacity and identifying nature-based solutions to improve resilience against the impacts of climate change. The project will center on listening to and working with residents, community groups, municipalities, and other stakeholders to co-create strategies and plans that incorporate local knowledge and priorities.

“By building strong relationships with the communities that are most impacted by climate change, we aim to identify solutions that are meaningful, relevant, and sustainable,” said Eric Bird, Stewardship Director of Shirley Heinze Land Trust. “We are committed to empowering local voices and ensuring that the communities themselves play a central role in shaping the future of the Calumet Region’s coastal resilience.”

The project will focus on creating actionable strategies for nature-based solutions to address climate challenges, and a portion of the grant funds will support participation of local groups to ensure the interests of residents are incorporated into the planning process. Through these efforts, Shirley Heinze and its partners aim to advance conservation work that is rooted in the values and needs of the communities they serve.

“Shirley Heinze Land Trust is deeply grateful to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation for their support and for making this project possible. This funding will be instrumental in helping the organization build a more resilient, sustainable future for the Calumet Region and the communities that call it home.” said Kristopher Krouse, Executive Director of the land trust.

More information on how to get involved and stay informed about the project will be shared as the work progresses. Additional information about the NCRF program can be found here: https://ow.ly/aQLh50Ujc1U

Michigan City man arrested on possession of child po*******hy charges

A Michigan City man was arrested on charges of Possession of Child Po*******hy as a result of an investigation by the Indiana State Police Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (ICAC).

The arrest, which occurred on Dec. 12, was the result of an investigation into numerous CyberTipline reports sent to the Indiana State Police ICAC Task Force from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). The tips ultimately led to a search warrant being served by the Indiana State Police, with the assistance of Homeland Security Investigations, at a residence located in the 4000 block of Breckenridge Avenue in Michigan City.

As a result of the investigation, Andrew Christian Crouch, 23, of Michigan City was arrested on three counts of Possession of Child Po*******hy. Crouch was transported to the LaPorte County Jail and booked into custody.

The Indiana State Police was assisted by Homeland Security Investigations, LaPorte County Sheriff Warrant Division and Michigan City Prosecutor’s Office.

All criminal defendants are to be presumed innocent until, and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

The Indiana State Police oversees the ICAC Task Force, a multiagency task force that investigates allegations of using the internet to sexually exploit or entice children.

The ICAC Task Force encourages Hoosiers to report online exploitation, solicitation, and enticement-type crimes against children to the National center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). The NCMEC website can be accessed through the ICAC Task Force website.

MCHS earns first place trophy at Portage military drill meet

The Michigan City High School (MCHS) Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (MCJROTC) earned a first-place trophy at the Portage military drill meet on Saturday, Dec. 7 in the Color Guard category.

The Wolves defeated larger schools, including perennial powerhouse schools Ben Davis and Warren Central from Indianapolis. Three of the four cadets in the Color Guard plan to enter the military. Cadet Major Marcus has enlisted in theMarine Corps for Reconnaissance, which is the Marine equivalent of Navy SEALS or ArmySpecial Forces. Cadet 2nd Lieutenant Matthew Wilson plans to enlist in the Navy for its nuclear submarine program. Cadet Sergeant Jordon Staples plans on enlisting in the Army for infantry. He replaced Cadet Gunnery Sergeant Daniel Kohn, who was wrestling for the MCHS team, which had a tournament on the same day. Kohn, a junior, plans on attending the U.S. NavalAcademy. An education there is valued at $350,000. Upon graduation, he wants to become a Navy SEAL.

“Despite having to replace some of our usual starters for a variety of reasons, ouryounger cadets stepped up and made us competitive in the other categories,” said MarineInstructor Master Sergeant Jeff Benak.

Senior Marine Instructor Major Tom McGrath noted the dedication of the cadets who, onthat same day, also volunteered at the Salvation Army and then led the Michigan City Festival ofLights Parade that night. “Our cadets demonstrated that ‘can-do,’ ‘do-what-needs-to-done’attitude that typifies MCHS cadets.”

The cadets will continue to support MCHS and the community up to the holiday break. This includes providing Color Guards for all home basketball games, helping with the One CityOne Sound concert, and supporting the Salvation Army with Christmas donations. Michigan City Area Schools

NIPSCO NAMES RECIPIENTS OF NEW BRIDGING OUR ENERGY GRANT

Organizations will receive bi-annual endowments to fuel DEI initiatives
MERRILLVILLE, Ind. — Northern Indiana Public Service Company LLC (NIPSCO), in partnership with its parent company’s NiSource Charitable Foundation, is delighted to announce the winners of its inaugural Bridging Our Energy Grant. Purdue University Northwest and Boys & Girls Club of Northern Indiana Corridor have each been awarded $100,000 each for strategic initiatives centered on diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI) and economic inclusion programs.

Introduced in October, the Bridging Our Energy Grant received 46 applications from
organizations across NIPSCO’s northern Indiana service area. Eligible organizations had to be a 501(c)3 as determined by the Internal Revenue Service with a DEI and/or economic inclusion program focus as well as a direct impact in NIPSCO’s service area.

The Foundation will fund the grants for each organization with two annual installments of $50,000 in 2024 and 2025.

Purdue University Northwest will launch a diversity outreach and engagement program for its Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The program supports Dr. Arash Asrari's focus on power system resilience, smart grids and renewable energy. The Boys & Girls Club of Northern Indiana Corridor will debut an emotional well-being service program expansion to serve children in White, Pulaski, Fulton and Cass counties.

Vince Parisi, NIPSCO President and Chief Operating Officer, said there were many
compelling initiatives proposed during the grant review process, and that the recipients were chosen for their ability to provide initiatives that empower future innovators to build a more inclusive, sustainable world.

“We believe this grant will amplify the tremendous work these two organizations are
already doing, and we’re confident that the initiatives funded will have a lasting impact on our communities,” Parisi said.

The two other finalists for the Bridging Our Energy Grant, the YWCA Northeast Indiana and Amani Fort Wayne, will each receive $10,000 in recognition of their strong submissions.

Unity Foundation Announces 2025 Lilly Endowment Community Scholars

The Unity Foundation of La Porte County is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2025 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship for La Porte County – Colton Barnes, South Central Jr-Sr High School and Bailey Chavis, Michigan City High School. Lilly Endowment Community Scholars are known for their community involvement, academic achievement, character, and leadership.

“Bailey and Colton embody the spirit of community and true leadership that the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship seeks to honor. Colton impressed the Scholarship Committee with his dedication to community service, particularly with his role in the Shine the Light Project, which creates inclusive opportunities in theater for people of all abilities, and his leadership in various school organizations like Robotics and National Honor Society. His passion for nursing and serving others reflects his commitment to making a meaningful impact in the world. Meanwhile, Bailey showcased extraordinary leadership as a student government officer, class president, and athlete across multiple sports. Her work as a student commissioner for Michigan City’s Sustainability Commission and as a volunteer at Tannehill Soup Kitchen highlights her dedication to improving her community and addressing critical issues like food insecurity. Both Bailey and Colton are shining examples of the positive change young leaders can achieve,” said CC Payne, Director of Operations at Unity Foundation.

Each Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship provides for full tuition, required fees and a special allocation of up to $900 per year for required books and required equipment for four years. The scholarship is for full-time undergraduate students leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university. Lilly Endowment Community Scholars may also participate in the Lilly Scholars Network (LSN), which connects both current scholars and alumni with resources and opportunities to be active leaders on their campuses and in their communities. Both the scholarship program and LSN are supported by grants from Lilly Endowment to Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) and Indiana Humanities.

“The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship will enable me to further pursue an education that will allow me to provide for my community to a greater extent. It is with great pride and gratitude that I am able to call myself a Lilly Scholar,” said Colton Barnes.

Bailey Chavis shared, “I am so unbelievably honored, and I cannot fully express how grateful I am to be chosen to represent both my school and the Unity Foundation as the recipient of this scholarship. It is the great privilege and responsibility of my life to be engaged in my community, and I am so excited that I will be able to continue this work.”

In determining La Porte County’s Lilly Endowment Community Scholar nominees, consideration was given to Service, Academics, and Activities by the Unity Foundation Scholarship Committee, After the field of applicants was narrowed down, nominees were submitted to ICI, the statewide administrator of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program, which approves the final selection of scholarship recipients.

Maggi Spartz, Unity Foundation President shares “The Unity Foundation staff and volunteers invest a lot of time reviewing the applications, choosing and interviewing the finalists in person. The scores are tallied the two highest scores are referred to ICI. The quality of the candidates makes this task very hard, yet makes us all proud of what our high school students are achieving!”
Lilly Endowment created the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program for the 1997-98 school year. Since then, grant funding in excess of $490 million has supported more than 5,300 Indiana students who have received scholarships through the program.

The primary purposes of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program are: 1) to help raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana; 2) to increase awareness of the beneficial roles Indiana community foundations can play in their communities; and 3) to encourage and support the efforts of current and past Lilly Endowment Community Scholars to engage with each other and with Indiana business, governmental, educational, nonprofit and civic leaders to improve the quality of life in Indiana generally and in local communities throughout the state.

Since 1992, Unity Foundation of La Porte County has served donors, nonprofits and local communities. As La Porte County’s community foundation, it manages $45 million in assets, administers more than 350 charitable funds, and has distributed more than $25 million through direct grants and scholarships. Unity Foundation’s mission is to strengthen La Porte County now and forever by building permanent endowments; providing leadership; offering philanthropic vehicles for everyone; and being a catalyst for social and economic vitality. For more information, please visit uflc.net or call 219-879-0327.

Lilly Endowment Inc. is an Indianapolis-based private foundation created in 1937 by J.K. Lilly Sr. and his sons Eli and J.K. Jr. through gifts of stock in their pharmaceutical business, Eli Lilly and Company. Although the gifts of stock remain a financial bedrock of the Endowment, it is a separate entity from the company, with a distinct governing board, staff and location. In keeping with the founders’ wishes, the Endowment supports the causes of community development, education and religion. Although the Endowment funds programs throughout the United States, especially in the field of religion, it maintains a special commitment to its founders’ hometown, Indianapolis, and home state, Indiana
Since 1997, Independent Colleges of Indiana has administered the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program statewide with funding provided by Lilly Endowment. Founded in 1948, ICI serves as the collective voice for the state’s 29 private, nonprofit colleges and universities. ICI institutions employ over 22,000 Hoosiers and generate a total local economic impact of over $5 billion annually. Students at ICI colleges have Indiana’s highest four-year, on-time graduation rates, and ICI institutions produce 30 percent of Indiana’s bachelor’s degrees while enrolling 20 percent of its undergraduates.
