Today our MORGAN WALLEN song “SPIN YOU AROUND” becomes 200 MILLION streams old (just on Spotify alone). Soon to be certified double platinum. Been a hell@of a ride for a little song with humble beginnings.

I’ve been taking a break from social media to concentrate on multiple projects but excited to announce that our label PANACEA RECORDS has just entered into a partnership with SYMPHONIC DISTRIBUTION. It’s going to be a great step forward for our current projects KIND VILLAIN and ELENI AND THE UPRISING (coming soon). Symphonic is really going to be an incredible asset and I’m really looking for us to get back to our roots of alt/pop and alt/rock. We’re actively looking for special new artists that fit that bill.

Apple continues to be the only Mega-corporation that at least has some scruples in regards to royalty rates for artists and songwriters. They're increasing their monthly fee by 10% and will pass on an increase to the creators. What's interesting is their subscription rate increase was 10% but the new CRB increase amounts to more of a 15% increase in mechanicals. Would love to see a pie chart of their income breakdown going forward.

In the US, starting from Monday (October 24), an individual Apple Music subscription will go up by $1 per month…

I often talk about the fact that streaming has now changed the life span of music. I'm happy for Sting and The Police one of my childhood musical heroes.

We talked about this in my recent interview. There’s a reason (actually 3 reasons) that investment bankers are gobbling up music catalogs at a 15x+ multiple. That means they are willing to pay upfront for 15 years of income. Why? Because they know that the catalog will generate more than 15 years of income.

There are 2 other reasons music catalogs are appealing to them. First they are an uncorrelated asset. Simply put, it doesn’t matter if the stock market goes up or down, recession or not, they will make money.

The second reason is in a low interest rate environment they provide a good return compared to bonds and bills. I would expect acquisitions to slow down now that interest rates are up (but if the Fed does it's job that won’t last forever).

Today we officially release KIND VILLAIN, “ONE MORE NIGHT”. This is the 6th song I’ve done for Kind Villain and our first partnered with Symphonic Distribution. I’m proud to have made a song that is an amalgam of so many eras of music that I love. (See if you can hear the influences.) I’m sitting here with a diet coke, so read on if you want to hear me talk more about the song: This song had a unique development arc. Originally it was another song, and the line “Hey, I’ll be alright if you could stay with me for one more night” was the tag. I was listening back to it with Bill and we both thought “wow that tag is special, the rest of the song-meh”. So I threw out the rest of the song and started over. (learning moment: being able to throw out your own hard work is one of the toughest but most necessary skills you can have as a writer or producer.) As the song developed I really wanted to push for dynamics ranging from one vocal and an acoustic to the full band and the kitchen sync. Once the verse was started the song came together almost effortlessly. EV came in and tore it up on vocals. I knew the emotion in the verses could turn the song into a vocal showpiece and it did just that. Wow what a great vocal take. I finished the music and the mix came together quickly (or so I thought). I sent the mix to mastering and went on vacation. When I got the version back i realized “this mix is pretty far off” (effectively ruining several days of my vacation). I spent time with earbuds trying to map out the changes to the mix, or could I possibly just fix it with mastering? Well, just like the original writing, I came back home after vacation threw a lot out and started the mix over. I’ve always said that it doesn’t matter if you finished the song from initial spark to master in 3 days or 3 months, the listener doesn’t know or care. All that matters is what’s coming out of the speakers. Thanks to everybody involved, Bill, E
