A Few Good Men (1992) is a gripping legal drama that follows the story of Lieutenant Daniel Kaffee (Tom Cruise), a young and inexperienced Navy lawyer, as he defends two Marines, Lance Corporal Harold Dawson and Private Louden Downey, accused of murdering a fellow Marine, Private William Santiago, at Guantanamo Bay. Initially, Kaffee plans to negotiate a plea deal, but his co-counsel, Lieutenant Commander Joanne Galloway (Demi Moore), suspects a deeper conspiracy and pushes for a full trial.
As the case unfolds, it is revealed that Santiago was subjected to a "code red," an unofficial and violent punishment ordered by his superiors. The defence team uncovers evidence that Colonel Nathan Jessep (Jack Nicholson), the commanding officer at Guantanamo, may have authorised the code red to discipline Santiago for his poor performance. Jessep denies the allegations, maintaining that his actions were necessary to maintain order and security.
In the film's climactic courtroom scene, Kaffee aggressively cross-examines Jessep, leading to the iconic moment where Jessep, under pressure, admits, "You're goddamn right I did!" This confession exposes the truth but also highlights the moral complexities of military justice. Dawson and Downey are acquitted of murder but are dishonourably discharged for their actions.
The film explores themes of honour, duty, and the cost of blind obedience. With stellar performances, particularly Nicholson’s explosive portrayal of Jessep, A Few Good Men remains a powerful and thought-provoking drama that questions the balance between morality and authority.
