Some weeks ago, I reached out to Phoenix Indian Medical Center Indian Health Service to become a part of their Native Arts & Crafts Market. The Events Coordinator, Roberta Arthur, told me they cannot allow me to participate as "other people" who sell Avon & Mary Kay will want to come sell. I tried to explain that Mary Kay & Avon are big corporations that are owned by non-natives. Bizhaan Beauty is 100% Native Owned and caters to the Native American People. Bizhaan Beauty participates at Pow Wow events and any other "Native Arts & Crafts" events. I totally felt discriminated against. I have a voice and I'm going to use it to speak out. I still would love to attend the events at PIMC as a Native Owned Small Business. I hope they reconsider and allow different businesses to come in, not just the same people every market. There are lots of other Native Owned Businesses who would like to be part of your Native Art Markers as well. Bizhaan Beauty deserves to be at your Native Art Market. Applying cosmetics and expressing one's self by using cosmetics is definitely an "art."
