THE WA1LYT RADIO STORY By Tom Coss!
WA1LYT RADIO Started many years ago when I was about 11 years old! I wanted to get into Radio and living right up the street from me, only a few houses away, was Art - WA1HJZ! He had a three element beam antenna on a large tower located on the side of his house. So one day I got up the courage to knock on his door and ask if I could see his Amateur Radio Station! He said YES and that was my first step into the REAL WORLD OF RADIO! I had a shortwave radio and I use to enjoy listening to TIM - WA1HLR and also to FRED - WA1HMC on my receiver! Then I saw a notice in the local newspaper about a Free Code Class being started by The Meriden Connecticut Amateur Radio Club and I just knew this was something I had to check out! I went there with my good friend Pat McLaughlin and we both started in a Morse Code Class being taught by FLOYD STINER - W1WEE. Floyd had a nickname of WEE WEE because of his call letters. My friend Pat and I both learned the code at 5 WPM so we could pass the novice test to get our FCC Amateur Radio Licenses. Pat passed and was given the call sign WN1LSI but I failed on my first try. A month later I tried again and passed this time and was assigned the call letters WN1LYT By The FCC! I next went for my Technician Class license which I passed and became WA1LYT at age 13!!! A few years later some friends were going to the FCC office in Boston, Mass. and I went with them. One of those friends was John Giannetti WA1NBB of Plantsville, CT. I went and tried for an Up-grade of my license and came back home with an ADVANCED CLASS Amateur Radio License at about age 16! A few months later I was at the FCC office in New York City with my mother Rita and passed my THIRD CLASS FCC Radiotelephone License so I could work at WMMW 1470 AM Radio in my hometown of Meriden, Connecticut! I also went to The Connecticut School of Broadcasting, owned and operated by Dick Robinson, and to H.C. Wilcox Technical School where I majored in Electronics taught by Mr. Ted McGiveren and Mr. Frank Porter who was W1MVN! I also worked at a few other Radio and TV Stations around the state of Connecticut. So thats my long story that I tried to make short in 25 words or less Friends!
