On Octoer 8, 1908, Isadore Moritz published the first issue of the Mercedes Enterprise. He continued the operation until 1914; that same year Ben E. Hoyt began the Mercedes Tribune. Another paper, the News-Item, started in 1922 and merged with the Tribune seven years later to form the News-Tribune. Paul Netz bought the franchise in 1941 and restored the original name. STAFF:

Pony League Registration Opens Saturday with Baseball & Softball Clinic

The local Pony League is set to kick off registration this Saturday, February 8, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Mercedes High School baseball ans softball diamonds. As part of the registration event, the league will also host a baseball and softball clinic to help young athletes sharpen their skills.

Parents and players interested in signing up can attend the event and take advantage of the clinic. For more information, they can contact Pony League President Felix Rocha at (956) 532-8960, Arnold Ramirez at (956) 376-7586, or Herman De La Cerda at (956) 792-9903.

Honoring the Life of Rodolfo Gutierrez

Rodolfo Gutierrez, a beloved father, husband, grandfather, brother, and proud Marine, passed away in August 2024 at the age of 60. His unwavering dedication to family, service, and community will be remembered by all who knew him.

Born on August 1, 1964, in Mercedes, Texas, Rodolfo was the cherished son of Pablo and Benita Gutierrez. He graduated from Mercedes High School and went on to proudly serve his country as a Marine for four years, embodying the values of honor, courage, and commitment.

Rodolfo is survived by his loving children: Rhonda Ramirez, Rodolfo Jr. Gutierrez, Gina Garcia, and Eve Violet Gutierrez. He was also a devoted grandfather to ten grandchildren: Yandel Cavazos, Zion Cavazos, Wes Cavazos, Xavion Cavazos, Logan Ian Gutierrez, Gia Avery Gutierrez, Luke Ryan Gutierrez, Ariel Salome Carreon, Ally Concepcion Garcia, and Aurora Lenexis Franco.

A funeral service to celebrate Rodolfo’s life will be held on February 1, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, at Mission Luterana Emanuel, located at 257 Washington Ave, Mercedes, TX 78570.

Rodolfo’s legacy of love, strength, and service will live on in the hearts of his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered.

Raul Martinez passes away

October 25, 1967 – January 21, 2025

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want...” (Psalms 23:1-4)

Raul Martinez, 57, of Mercedes, Texas, was called home to be with the Lord on January 21, 2025. Born on October 25, 1967, Raul was a beloved son, father, brother, and friend who touched many lives with his kindness and unwavering faith.

Raul is preceded in death by his cherished grandmothers, Juanita Martinez Hernandez and Natividad Martinez Silva. He is survived by his devoted parents, Oliver and Socorro Closner, and his loving children: Crystal Tamez (Martinez), Darcy Devonne Martinez, Raul Martinez Jr., and Roman Martinez.

He is also survived by his brothers and their families: Oliver and Anita Closner, Orlando Closner, Otis and Araissa Closner, and Ojay and Lupita Closner, as well as all his beloved Closner nieces and nephews, who will forever carry his memory in their hearts.

Raul’s legacy is one of love, faith, and devotion to his family. He found strength in the Lord, often turning to Psalm 23, which guided him through life’s trials and triumphs.

Raul will be deeply missed, but his faith and love will continue to shine through the lives of those who knew him.

The Mercedes Recreation Center, 1202 N. Vermont, will be used as a Warming Shelter for the freezing weather! Doors will open Monday, Jan. 20th, from 6pm to 12 Midnight. The shelter will remain open through the night if citizens take advantage of the space, closing only if no one arrives. The shelter will reopen the next morning, Tuesday Jan. 21st at 8am and officially close Wednesday, Jan. 22nd, at noon.
Citizens of Mercedes are welcomed, as well as neighboring cities, to the Dome. We encourage you to bring your own blankets, pillows, food, snacks, and other necessities. Pets are NOT allowed UNLESS they are SERVICE ANIMALS.
We are ready to help our community during this harsh weather! Thank you all and be safe!
