Common conversations with musicians: I kill it onstage but suck at recording in my home studio. Being good at one doesn't necessarily make you good at the other.

If you're lucky enough to have spent as much time in a recording studio as gigging and performing congrats that's awesome, but for those who haven't it's a different story.

Home Studio Recording has grown exponentially over the past decade. Not everyone feels comfortable going into a recording studio or has the time and money.

Whatever the reason, the Home Studio category continues to grow. At the same time, It has also created a huge demand for help, training, and education. Let's face it, everyone wants instant success and home studio recording is no different.

"If I am good at playing an instrument I should be good at recording". (If that were always true) Experience, learning, and failure are the real tools of success.

I've been in audio and music my entire life. Hell I was the only kid in town at the age of 10 that installed a stereo on his bicycle back in 1977. You get the point. Experience matters.

We live in amazing times with the technology available to us. I started using Pro Tools in 1994 and look where we are thirty years later. Pretty cool.

Top of the morning studio friends & fam! What projects are you working on in your Home Studio?

Tracking some guitars and bass today for a new project which brings up pain points and struggles for many new home studio artists and producers.

How do I get good recordings? How do I get that sound I hear in my head?

There's a great deal that goes into recording guitars and bass that would seem obvious but not always the case.

Here are a few basics to help you in your musical home studio journey:

-Fresh strings! Yes, fresh strings! Try replacing your strings a day or two in advance of your recording session and stretching them several times and retuning to pitch.

-Guitar or Bass Setup: When was the last time you had your guitar or bass professionally setup? New strings, proper neck relief, string height, intonation, pickup height. If you know how to properly setup your own instrument, that's awesome. If not, let a pro do it.

-Sound/Tone: Sound and tone are subjective. What you might like and what someone else might like can be very different.

Far too often I see new home studio clients seeking advice from friends, family, or other musicians about their tone, their sound or their song. If you ask 20 people, you'll get 20 different answers.

Do yourself a favor, stop asking for advice or seeking validation. If it sounds good to you, then it's good! That's all that matters. Remember "tone is subjective" I mentioned above?

You are the artist making your own music. Only you know how it's supposed to sound because you composed it.

-Levels: Levels are important on several levels. (see what I did there?)

Recording levels: Having a proper clean recording level is key. if the level is too low it won't fit in the mix and you'll waste a lot of time trying to increase the volume to adequate levels. (Side note: look at the waveform of the track in your DAW, if it's tiny, that's a pretty good indicator your track level is too low.)

Levels too hot: Clipping your tracks in the digital domain will sound nasty. Go back and reduce the input levels to avoid this and record the track again.

-Metronome/Count in: Use a click track or metronome when recording. Far too often I've witnessed home studio clients not use a metronome or click track and then try to add drums or percussion and nothing lines up. They will spend hours moving things around trying to sync up the guitars with the drums.

Go back and record it right.

At the end of the day it all starts with the source. If the source recording isn't good, go back and do it again. You won't fix it in the mix which is an even deeper rabbit hole new home studio artists and producers find themselves in.

This is not an exhaustive list and not intended to be, merely some basics that can go a long way towards recording it right.
