Black History Month Spotlight: Morrie Turner

While comics have long been a part of pop culture, Morrie Turner was a trailblazer in making them more inclusive. In 1965, he became the first nationally syndicated black cartoonist with "Wee Pals", a diverse comic strip that showcased people of different races and backgrounds - something unheard of at the time.

Turner used humor and heart to challenge stereotypes and promote unity, paving the way for greater diversity in comics. His work remains a major influence on black creators today.

Black History Spotlight: Clarence Matt Baker

Beginning his career in 1944, Matt Baker was one of the first successful black comic artists, drawing more than 1,000 pages and over 200 covers. He was known for his elegant, dynamic style (usually referred to as "Good Girl" art) and co-created titles like Canteen Kate and Phantom Lady.

Baker also illustrated "It Rhymes With Lust" (which is possibly the first ever graphic novel) and worked across many genres. Despite facing barriers in a segregated industry, his talent and perseverance paved the way for black characters and black artists. Passing away at only age 37, he managed to leave an indelible mark and, in 2009, he was posthumously inducted into the Will Eisner Hall of Fame.

Black History Month Spotlight: Ann Peebles

Before Memphis soul had a storm, Ann Peebles made it rain. The powerhouse singer behind "I Can't Stand The Rain" and "I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down" helped define the Hi Records sound in the 70s, helping put Memphis on the map with her raw, emotional vocals.

Peebles' music blended blues, gospel, soul and influenced artists across generations - from hip-hop samples to covers by legends like Tina Turner. Though she never sought the spotlight, her voice became unforgettable and she was inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame in 2014. We're proud to celebrate her legacy!

Black History Month Spotlight: George Herriman

One of the most influential cartoonists of all time, George Herriman was the creative genius behind Krazy Kat - a surreal, poetic and popular comic strip that ran for decades.

Herriman, who had Creole roots and was of mixed African descent, created one the first comics that blurred the line between art and storytelling. Krazy Kat was beloved by fellow artists and writers, inspiring future greats like Charles Schulz and Will Eisner.

His legacy proves that comics can be weird, beautiful, and deeply meaningful - a philosophy many cartoonists since then have lived by!

Black History Month Spotlight: Orrin C. Evans & All-Negro Comics

In 1947, All-Negro Comics #1 made history as the first comic book entirely created, written, and illustrated by black artists and writers. Founded by journalist and editor Orrin C. Evans, A--Negro Comics Inc. set out to provide positive and empowering black representation in comics at a time when such stories were rare.

The first (and only) issue featured heroes like Ace Harlem, a sharp-witted detective, and Lion Man, an African warrior protecting the Gold Coast. The stories were rich with action, humor, and black excellence - long before mainstream comics caught up.

Unfortunately, due to racial discrimination in the publishing industry, All-Negro Comics was unable to continue past its first issue, but its legacy lives on as a trailblazer for black creators in comics. Evans and his team paved the way for the diverse, independent storytelling you see today.

Black History Month Spotlight: Rufus Thomas

From Beale Street to the world, Rufus Thomas was the heartbeat of Memphis music! A legendary DJ, singer, and entertainer, Thomas helped shape the city's soul, R&B, and funk scene with classics like "Walking the Dog" and "Do the Funky Chicken."

As a DJ at WDIA, the first black-owned radio station in the U.S., he gave a platform to rising black musicians, changing the course of music history. His charisma, humor, and groove are forever part of the Memphis culture. Without Rufus Thomas, Memphis music wouldn't be the same - so let's keep his funky spirit alive!

Black History Month Spotlight: Jackie Ormes

Jackie Ormes was the first black female cartoonist in the U.S. and a true pioneer in comics. Known for her groundbreaking strips "Torchy Brown" and "Patty-Jo 'n' Ginger", she brought humor, activism, and powerful storytelling to the page.

At a time when black characters in comics were often reduced to stereotypes, Ormes created smart, stylish, and independent black women, showing the world what true representation looked like. Her work still inspires generations of comic creators today - ourselves included!

Black History Month Spotlight: Robert Johnson

This Black History Month, we're celebrating the legends who shaped music, comics, and storytelling - starting with Robert Johnson, the bluesman whose influence runs through rock, soul, Thrill Comics and everything in between.

Born in Mississippi, with deep ties to the Delta, Johnson's haunting voice, masterful guitar work, and mysterious life story made him an enduring figure in American music. His recordings like Cross Road Blues and Hellhound on My Trail helped define the blues and inspire countless artists. Our very own mascot, Crestwood Blues, was based on him!

Some say he sold his soul to the devil at the crossroads... but one thing's for sure: he left an impact that still echoes through music and history today.
