Cool picture of the Light of Asia that stood in Cape May from 1885 to 1900. Cape May was where Acrymax was first used on historic projects and now Acrymax coatings are protecting Lucy in Margate.

We recently received this very rare photo of Lucy's sibling, The Light of Asia (1885-1900). This elephant-shaped building stood in South Cape May, NJ. Check out the rail road tracks in the foreground and The Light of Asia all the way on the right side. Wow! ❤️🐘

Built-in 1872, the Mainstay Inn was utilized as a gentlemen's gambling club and hotel. In today's world, the inn is recognized as an architectural jewel amid elegant summer homes and grand Victorian public buildings in Cape May, NJ, and is currently being used as a bed and breakfast. In 1976 the town of Cape May was declared a National Historic Landmark City

When looking for a solution to restore the inn's failing original tin roof, they looked to Acrymax for help. Acrymax systems help to keep the historical integrity of the building and have been specified on numerous projects by the National Park Service. Now decades later and the Roof Restoration System from Acrymax has held up exceptionally well in the corrosive salt air, high winds, and extreme fluctuations in temperature that are common in this coastal community.

The Acrymax HP-1 System is a durable roof coating system specifically designed for historic metal roofs including standing seam, flat seam, and batten seam roofs. It provides a fully reinforced flexible membrane that conforms to the roof and does not change the historic appearance of the roof. It is widely used by the National Park Service, State Historical Agencies, Historic Societies, Historic Building Owners, and Homeowners around the country. Easy to apply and available in a wide range of colors.

Founded in 1865 Riverton Yacht Club is the oldest club on the Delaware River, oldest in New Jersey, and one of the oldest in the United States. The current club house was erected on the pier in 1880. During a recent restoration project Acrymax coatings supplied by Preservation Products were used to provide a waterproof and walkable surface on the 2nd floor wood decks of the club house. Acrymax coatings are versatile materials that find many uses in protecting historic buildings.

Interesting fact about Riverton Yacht Club: A burgee is a flag bearing the colors or emblem of a sailing club. The burgee for Riverton Yacht Club was designed in 1865 following the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. It was designed with stars and stripes in a swallow tail flag. Later in the fall of 1865 the US Congress passed a law that no private signal flag could use the stars and stripes design. Due to this you will not see another burgee in the US using a design close to that of the Riverton Yacht Club.

Sailboat racing continues to this day with different series and regattas throughout the spring, summer, and fall. Of note is the fact that Eric Bennung – Vice President of Acrymax and his sister Rachel have competed in sailing events at this club.

Little did they know that the tin roofs on this house would later become the inspiration for a company founded in 1994 to market Acrymax coatings and systems to the vintage home and historic markets. Scott Bennung, President of Preservation Products, recalls applying a waterborne acrylic elastomeric coating to one of the roofs on the house back in the late 70’s. “At the time waterborne technology for roof coatings was in its infancy. The ease of application was incredible. In addition to being easy to apply the coating system did not change the historic appearance of the roof. I knew immediately that there was a market for these coatings to protect historic structures.”
The story of Preservation Products begins in Cape May, but it goes on to cities and towns throughout the country. Follow us over the coming weeks as we showcase historic buildings protected with Acrymax coatings and learn a little history along the way
Interesting facts about Cape May: In the Bicentennial Year of 1976 Cape May was officially designated a National Historic Landmark City, only one of five in the nation. By 1800 Cape May was an established seashore destination for residents of New Jersey and nearby Philadelphia and is recognized as the country’s oldest seashore resort
