Eddie Matteson was born on Sunday September 7, 1884, in Guys Mills, Pennsylvania. Matteson was 29 years old when he broke into the big leagues on May 30, 1914, with the Philadelphia Phillies. After the Phillies, Matteson went on to play in the Texas Leagues, but when the US entered World War 1, the League fell apart. Matteson, however, was not forgotten and in 1918 he was invited to pitch for the Washington Senators.

Now in his mid 30's Matteson was considered an old man, but he still played well for his year with the Senators, finishing with a .625% W-L percentage and a 1.73 ERA. The Washington Times recounts a thrilling dual between Matteson and the White Sox's Eddie Cicotte who was later implicated for his part in fixing the 1919 World Series. Matteson is credited with the 4-2 win before a packed crowd of thousands of soldiers and sailors.
