Canadian Pacific Railway has been busy raising the tracks to continue operating as the Mississippi River rises. This video was captured looking down from the Marquette overlook.
This is what it looks like on the Marquette riverfront at 22 feet - major flood level. According to the National Weather Service, the Mississippi River is expected to rise a little over two more feet, to 24.3 feet, by Saturday, April 29.
We will have more details in this week’s Times-Register.
Protection is currently being built up by the Marquette City Shop and Mar-Mac Police Station as the Mississippi River continues to rise.
The Mississippi River at McGregor is at 21.45 feet and will hit major flood stage of 22 feet by tomorrow. According to the NWS, it will reach 24.4 feet by next weekend.
These projections look to eclipse the second highest crest of 23.75 feet in 2001. The record is 25.38 in 1965.
Sandbags were filled in Marquette this morning, in preparation for what will be major flooding in the coming days. The Mississippi River hit 20 feet at McGregor this afternoon and will increase to 23.5 feet later next week. The National Weather Service projects the crest to reach from 24.3 to 25.3 feet between April 28 and 30.
Today's sandbag crew included city workers, firefighters, local and county law enforcement, Marquette residents, Luana Savings Bank employees, staff and students from New Frontier School in Prairie du Chien and around 100 students and staff from MFL MarMac.
According to Marquette Mayor Steve Weipert, the sandbags will largely be used for manhole covers and to reinforce the dikes.
