I've never written a book before. I'd never set out to share my thoughts either. I had no intention of doing anything like this... but this project took on special meaning when the veil of a creative block hit.

It was 2020 and the pandemic had us all on high alert. I was stuck and I needed some direction. Technically I was still producing art, but creatively I was in a doldrum. Rinse and repeat, same old, same old. Nothing new and nothing inspired.

I was approached by a dance company out of Houston Texas who saw some of my work with another group out of Oklahoma. Tehillah (the founder) wanted me to work with her on her Advent Dance Devotional. It felt like an invitation although I was extremely hesitant and tender about my ability to do anything significant. We spent time dreaming about the project. I began the illustrations and sent over a draft to review. She was floored. I was shocked. Something was coming together.

Then one day while getting ready I began humming the tune to "this little light of mine. I'm gonna let it shine." Immediately without warning, I got a download of ideas and inspiration for telling the story of this song. One thing led to another and the next thing I knew I was researching Advent, reading scripture, and another devotional began to come together. I wasn't finished with the one project and already another was being birthed. more and more imagery, inspiration, and ideas began to emerge until finally when it was all said and done, my collaboration produced two advent devotionals, a short film, a series of images using long-exposure, a live event, a collaboration with YouVersion, a paperback book, and now a Live Reading event.

Collaboration saved me in 2020. It's given me a new outlook and perspective on the whole creative process. It's shown me that every mundane act is poking a hole in the veil of darkness between what is and what can be.

Stop waiting for inspiration to strike. Be diligent, show up, and do the work. When it comes to the creative process, showing up is the first step.

Positioning ourselves as creatives to be attentive to the creative spirit is just as important as preparing a place for that same spirit to find us working out our craft, our ideas, our wonder in the secret place. Hoisting our sails is as important as weighing our anchors.

There's an old adage that says "let inspiration find you working." I don't know about you but I have found this true in some seasons of life and in others, inspiration has literally just shown up. I'd like to say that it just manifested because I was worthy. I'd like to take credit and say I was working hard.

But the truth is I often get inspiration in the shower, or when I'm out walking. I don't seem to find this principle of inspiration bending to my will like the old adage claims. Nor do I find it when I feel like doing the work in order to draw it to me (ie. striving).

Rather I find this to be true. As an artist I create. It is my DNA, my nature, my calling. When I lift my hands to catch the wind of the spirit's muse, I will inevitably catch it. Maybe not every time, but I will catch it.

A principle doesn't need to be tested to prove its validity. Its truth is inherent, we must forgo our feelings of insecurity and trust in faith, hold our arms high (work sketch, draw, paint, mess up, try again) and let the wind unfurl our efforts into something magical, beautiful, and transcendent.

We recently finished a video for Maryland-based Sculptor Sarah Hempel Irani of Hempel Studios. This was an especially beautiful and intimate project exploring her role as an artist, mother, sculptor, teacher, and traveler.

Sarah says of being an artist "...it means living with a sense of childlike wonder and curiosity." We feel the same way Sarah. We can't take ourselves too seriously as creatives. Our work deserves our attention and focus. But without curiosity and play our work has no life.

Have you ever gotten quiet? I mean really quiet. Away from the noise of media, news, or business. If you have then you know as well as I do there is another layer of noise beneath the surface. It's your self-talk. If you're like me, the biggest critic in your life isn't the world around you, it's you.

It often sounds like this.
"You should have it together by now."
You should be a better husband (or wife)."
"You should save more, spend less."
"You should be more successful by now."

The inner critic makes you think to yourself "What's wrong with me? Let me tell you, there's nothing wrong with you that can't be adjusted by doing one thing.

Stop"should-ing" all over yourself.

Managing our own expectations will save us from striving (it's literally killing you) and free us up to be the creative we are called to be.

Everything we attempt to create goes through a stage where we find ourselves wanting to give up. Some form of resistance presents itself. We become discouraged or afraid. We flirt with trashing it, painting over it, or quitting our craft altogether.

Whatever you do, persist, resist the resistance. We are overcomers only by going through the things that stand in our way.

Giving yourself to the journey of discovery and learning is a great pursuit when it comes to creativity. You show up and in doing so are met with questions, themes, fears, observations, and somehow they turn into something unique and wonderful.

Maybe it will never be placed beneath a plexiglass cube for onlookers to behold at a distance. Instead, maybe it was meant for you to touch and experience so you could become in the process.
