UPDATE: We're back up and running now, as of Thursday morning, May 2. There's a ton of news to get posted to the website and a slew of emails to go through after being down for 2 days, though, so be patient as we recover from the server issue in the days ahead. Thanks!

The Illinois Business Journal is experiencing technical issues due to a server problem. Our website and email are both down. The issue began on Tuesday, April 30, 2024 and continues into today, May 1, 2024. We are continuing to work on preparing the May issue to go to press, but we are not able to send or receive emails at this time nor load new items to our website. We will post an update here when the systems are restored. -- IBJ Managing Editor Melissa Crockett Meske

IDPH IMMEDIATE ALERT: Certain Eclipse Glasses Recalled

Public is urged to check their glasses to make sure they meet safety standards

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Public Health is urging the public to double-check their eclipse glasses after certain brands were recalled for potentially failing to meet safety standards.

The glasses in question were reportedly sold through Amazon as Biniki Solar Eclipse Glasses AAS Approved 2024 – CE & ISO Certified Safe Shades for Direct Sun Viewing (6 Packs). The glasses were also reportedly available at several Southern Illinois retail establishments, including:

Farm Fresh Market, Breese, IL
Highland Tru Buy, Highland, IL
Perry County Marketplace, Pinckneyville, IL
Sinclair Foods, Jerseyville, IL
Steelville Marketplace, Steelville, IL
Big John Grocery, Metropolis, IL

The recalled glasses are labeled as “EN ISO 12312-1:2022”; proper safety glasses should carry the ISO designation of 12312-2.

People in possession of the recalled glasses should not use them to view the eclipse. Using inadequate eye protection could lead to serious eye damage.

I-55/64 work in East St. Louis begins March 22

Anticipated completion by the end of May

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that patching and resurfacing in both directions of Interstate 55/64 across the Poplar Street Bridge from a mile east of the Mississippi River to the I-55/64/70 interchange in East St. Louis will require multiple interstate closures.

To minimize impacts to commuters, construction will be carried out over six weekends, starting, weather permitting, at 9 p.m. Friday, March 22, to 5 a.m. Monday, March 25.

The work will begin with pavement patching, which will require a full closure of eastbound I-55/64, including all ramps to and from eastbound I-55/64 within the project limits. The eastbound lanes of the Martin Luther King Bridge also will be closed.

The ramp from eastbound I-55/64 to southbound Illinois 3, westbound I-55/64 and westbound Martin Luther King Bridge will remain open this weekend.

Weekday traffic will not be impacted.

The public is urged to plan accordingly and use alternate routes around the region, including the I-70 Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge and McKinley Bridge.

The overall $5.2 million project is expected to be completed by the end of May, with updated information provided in advance of each weekend closure.

Alton area commuters: Here's a heads-up from IDOT:

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that utility work by Ameren Illinois to replace a gas main along Broadway Avenue will require a closure of one eastbound lane between Sering Avenue and Washington Avenue in Alton beginning Monday, March 11 (weather permitting).

The closure is expected to be in place for four months.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to detour signs in work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.
