REMEMBERING THE STORM OF THE CENTURY! On this day 47 years ago, the Great Blizzard of 1978 started to dump massive snowfall and brought brutally cold temperatures to our area! Here are some quick stats:

➡ First Blizzard Warning ever issued for Indiana
➡ Highest Indiana snow depth recorded at 36"
➡ Snow drifts as high as 25 feet
➡ Wind chills were as low as -50°F
➡ 70 deaths

Our thoughts are with those affected by the Allen Media Group layoffs. We so wanted this to not be true but unfortunately it is...

Allen Media Group is laying off over 100 meteorologists across the US. This includes WEVV in Evansville, WTHI in Terre Haute, WLFI in West Lafayette, WFFT in Fort Wayne, and 16 other stations. Some great local media folks are being told they no longer have jobs. The current plan for AMG is to pre-record weather broadcasts from The Weather Channel (An Allen subsidiary) in Georgia and send them to local media outlets to be aired.

This is a big deal as it will affect how folks get breaking weather and news information. Of course, we at the Indiana Weather Network will continue our live coverage during severe weather, but many good and trusted weather personnel will be out jobs soon. Many of these Meteorologists have served their communities for DECADES.

We suggest everyone stay aware of this situation.
