Indiana Senate says NO to redistricting

UPDATE: Sen. Bray released the following statement following this afternoon's vote:

"Indiana Senate Republicans want to see a Republican majority in congress at the midterms. The issue before us today was how to get there, and many of my caucus members don't think redrawing our Congressional map mid-cycle is a guaranteed way for Indiana – or our country – to achieve that outcome.
"We support President Trump, and we are with him on many important issues like immigration enforcement and public safety, and Hoosiers will see legislation from our caucus this session that works in partnership with the federal government to further those efforts.
"Further, we are grateful for the way President Trump speaks about our great nation full of good people.
"It's time to turn the page. Hoosiers need leadership from their state government that will continue to improve our education system and make life more affordable for Hoosiers."

INDIANAPOLIS — Just after 4:30 p.m., the Indiana Senate voted down HB 1032, which would have paved the way for redistricting maps in the state of Indiana.
The bill failed to pass by a vote of 19 for and 31 against, with Senate President Pro Tempore Rod Bray (R-Martinsville) joining in the "nay" votes against the bill.
With a 40-10 GOP majority in the Senate, 21 Republican Senators voted against the bill.

MSD TO CLOSE FOUR SCHOOLS

Centerton, Green Township, Poston and Smith elementary schools will close after the 2026/'27 academic year, paving the way for the new elementary school being built off I-69 south of the Henderson Ford exit.
No details yet as to what will become of the four schools after their official closure, though the district has said it will hold onto "at least some" of them, hoping to repurpose them.

OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING

PATTON LAKE — Deputies responded around 1 p.m. this afternoon on reports of a breaking-and-entering call in the 4200 block of Belt Lane near Patton Lake.
A deputy responded and found someone on the premises, so the deputy called for backup. Additional law enforcement responded, including K9 officer David Tolin and his dog, Bullet.
Officers called for the person to exit the residence, but he refused to come out or show his hands. So they sent the K9 dog in, and the suspect attacked the dog with a blunt object, rendering it unconscious.
At that time, at least one deputy opened fire, and the suspect was hit. EMS was immediately called, and the suspect was transported by air to Methodist Hospital.
The dog was rushed to a veterinary clinic in Indianapolis, and according to most recent reports, it was awake and wagging its tail, said Morgan County Sheriff Rich Myers at a press conference held at 5 p.m. at the sheriff's office.
The matter is still under investigation by the Morgan County Major Crimes Taskforce.

The Indiana House of Representatives voted this afternoon on the redistricting bill — HB 1032 — which passed 57-41.
While the House has a 70-person GOP super majority, 12 Republicans voted against the bill, including Peggy Mayfield (R-Martinsville). Craig Haggard (R-Mooresville) voted for it.
The bill now goes to the Indiana Senate, which is expected to take up the issue, starting Monday, Dec. 8.

NOT SO FAST: State Senate looks to reconvene Dec. 8

STATEHOUSE — Senate President Pro Tem Rodric Bray (R-Martinsville) made the following statement today regarding the decision to reconvene the Senate in December as part of the regular 2026 session:

"The issue of redrawing Indiana's congressional maps mid-cycle has received a lot of attention and is causing strife here in our state. To resolve this issue, the Senate intends to reconvene as part of the regular 2026 session on Dec. 8 and make a final decision that week on any redistricting proposal sent from the House. Because we will reconvene as part of the regular 2026 legislative session, we anticipate concluding our regular 2026 session by the end of February."

Superior Court I Judge Dakota VanLeeuwen handed down the sentence this morning in a hearing that lasted nearly two hours.
Judge VanLeeuwen sentenced her to 20 years, with 12 years behind bars, 8 years suspended, and five years probation following her incarceration.

Work on the outside of the historic Morgan County Courthouse building got rained out this afternoon, but contractors have been putting in a lot of work throughout the week. And that work continued inside today, along with the ongoing masonry work on the bricks of the clock tower.
Much of the structure for the new addition to the courthouse was put in place, which will ultimately have a matching facade to go along with the matching windows.
The northside addition will provide space for ADA-compliant elevators along with a stairwell.
Work is set to resume next week, depending on weather.

Bray makes additional statement on redistricting

STATEHOUSE — Senate President Pro Tem Rodric Bray (R-Martinsville) made the following statement this afternoon regarding redrawing Indiana’s congressional maps mid-cycle:

“I want to be abundantly clear that our Senate Republican Caucus wants to see a Republican-held House in 2026 so that President Trump can continue making progress on important issues like fighting illegal immigration and crime in our country.

“However, many in my caucus, myself included, do not feel that redrawing our Congressional districts mid-cycle is the best way to achieve that goal. We would rather support efforts to elect a Republican in the existing 1st Congressional District, which has been trending Republican for the last several years and would give President Trump another Republican in Congress.

“We don’t believe the choice to redistrict is a binary choice where we will either keep a 7-2 map or draw one that automatically becomes 9-0. Candidates in these hypothetical districts have not walked a parade, attended a county fair or raised a dollar. And that’s before we get through primary season, in which we can assuredly expect competition.

“I’ve had the honor to speak with the President on this issue, and I have expressed to him that our caucus is supportive of him and wants to maintain Republican control of the House, which is why we believe pursuing Congressional District 1 is the best way forward.”
