Check out the Producer of the Month recognized by Wisconsin Community Media. Dan Ferch.

Many of us started in the audiovisual world in high school, picking up a camera for the first time and instantly finding school fun and possibly a career. Watching and learning was how Dan Ferch, "Video Dan" of Marshfield, started in the audiovisual world. Fast-forward 40-plus years, Ferch of Marshfield continues to use the video skills he learned in high school.

Dan's success came for John "Jack" H. Bittrich, a Marshfield high-school teacher who taught English, speech, theater, argumentation and debate, and TV broadcasting in 1980. He started in the audiovisual area in high school, learning how to set up lighting for theatrical productions from Bittrich, which led to getting involved in video and audio production. He remembers he stayed after school to learn how to edit and splice videos of orchestra and band concerts he filmed.

Dan said, "The video equipment was huge and would take up an entire room, and it would take a lot of work and time to finish just a single video."

Dan received an audiovisual award for his dedication in high school, which he is very thankful for to this day, he said.

After graduating, Dan continued to dabble in videography, working for a local videographer, but decided to get involved with childcare, followed by plumbing and currently custodial work for Marshfield Public Schools. In between all those jobs, Dan could be found at the local access station programming government meetings in the playback system, filming programming in the studio and on location, and doing some side video jobs to make a few extra bucks.

Currently, Dan films Marshfield Civic Band concerts in the park and provides his programs to Marshfield Broadcasting and on the band's website for those who can't watch the concerts in person. Dan finds it rewarding to hear people enjoy watching the concerts on TV, which he says makes it all worth his time. In addition to filming the civic band, you’ll find him behind a camera at other community events such as parades, dances, and theatricals.

Thank you, Dan, for your community involvement.
