The legend is that Afrika Bambaataa's DJ Battles in the Bronx were responsible for the New York City Blackout of 1977...

The TRUTH is the power grids blew from the heatwave overtaking the city. That legend may be false but he DID grow DJ culture in the Bronx into a movement across the city and out into the world. He was the FIRST to coin the phrase, "HIP HOP." And he collaborated with Johnny Rotten and PIL with the track "World Destruction" two whole YEARS before Run DMC would be cited as "the first to do a Rock-Rap record" with Aerosmith.

This man, along with DJ Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash and KRS-One, was a foundation block of an entire genre of music.

What a breath of fresh air The Hives were, at The Fillmore Philadelphia, last night!

While everything is volatile, tribal, political, and exhausting in our world right now, The Hives exploded onto the stage with simple, raw, protopunk-sounding rock & roll, sprinkled in with 2 scoops of laughs.
..just what all of us in Fishtown needed on a Monday.
