Replacements guitarist Bob “Slim” Dunlap passed on Wednesday. The Minnesota native was the “replacement Replacement.” He joined the band for their 1987 tour supporting Pleased to Meet Me as a replacement for Bob Stinson, and recorded on their final two studio albums, 1989’s Don’t Tell a Soul and 1991’s All Shook Down. According to Pitchfork, “Looking back, singer-guitarist Paul Westerberg and bassist Tommy Stinson credited Dunlap for bringing a spark of creativity and energy to the band during that final run.”
When Dunlap first met Westerberg, he was working at Minneapolis venue First Avenue as a janitor. After the Replacements split up, Dunlap went on to record two solo albums, 1993’s The Old New Me and 1996’s Times Like This, both praised by Bruce Springsteen, who told NPR, “They're just beautiful rock ’n’ roll records. I found them to be deeply touching and emotional.” In 2020, he released Thank You Dancers!—a live recording from 2002.
Dunlap was 73 years old.
