As we enter July, it’s the perfect time to pause and assess our business strategies. With half the year behind us, we have a golden opportunity to recalibrate and set the stage for a strong finish. Here’s a guide to help you make the most of the remaining months and propel your business to new heights.

1.Conduct a Mid-Year Review

Start by evaluating your progress against the goals you set at the beginning of the year. Analyze your financial performance, customer feedback, and key metrics. Identify what’s working and what’s not. This assessment will provide clarity on areas needing improvement and highlight successful strategies to continue.

2. Refine Your Goals

Based on your mid-year review, adjust your goals for the rest of the year. Ensure they are realistic yet ambitious, focusing on achievable milestones. Break down these goals into quarterly or monthly targets to maintain momentum and track progress more effectively.

Four years ago, launched the BLACK PARADE ROUTE, spotlighting Black-owned businesses worldwide. This initiative has since been a powerful testament to the influence and impact of these businesses, celebrating their contributions and fostering community pride.

Last year, Beyoncé’s commitment to Black entrepreneurship resulted in over 100 small businesses receiving support through a $1M investment. Collaborating with organizations like Goldman Sachs, Mastercard, Cisco, Grameen Bank, and NMSDC, essential resources were provided to elevate these businesses. The goal is to create significant economic impact across multiple cities, ensuring the success of thousands of small businesses. This collective effort underscores the belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to thrive.

In February 2024, Beyoncé introduced the x Fund in partnership with her new haircare line, Cécred. This fund honors the vital role of professional stylists and supports the cosmetology community. With an annual $500,000 contribution, it offers scholarships and business grants in cities like Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, and New Jersey. Scholarships have been awarded to students at institutions such as Trenz Beauty Academy in Chicago and Universal College of Beauty in Los Angeles. Business grants have supported salons including Kingdom Glam the Beauty Depot in Atlanta and Nela Beauty Salon LLC in Los Angeles.

Angel Reese ( )and Caitlin Clark have one of the most talked-about rivalries in sports today. Their competitive fire started during their college days at LSU and Iowa, respectively, and has only grown fiercer in the WNBA. While the media often portrays Reese as the antagonist and Clark as the golden child, the reality is much more complex and, in my opinion, the furthest thing from the truth.

According to Clark herself, there is no rivalry; she stated they are simply there to play basketball. However, the media cannot seem to help themselves as they highlight what seems to be every negative thing Reese does, especially when playing against Clark. Some headlines in the media have called Angel Reese “Clark’s tormentor.” For the past few months, the media has been in an uproar about Clark being targeted, bullied, and suffering physical abuse from the women in the WNBA, including Angel Reese. In my opinion, anyone who has ever watched a WNBA game would understand the level of physicality. They would know that Clark is not being targeted, and Reese has also been struck to the ground by WNBA players, most recently Alyssa Thomas, who was ejected from the game after a hard foul that included having her arms tied around Reese’s neck. There was no outrage for that situation at all. However, when Angel Reese’s teammate Chennedy Carter hip-checked Caitlin Clark in a game, the entire world, including mainstream media, called for action to bring these players to the forefront for a public hanging. The media went as far as highlighting Reese skipping the press conference and being fined for doing so. Every time Reese gets a technical, it makes the front page of sports news. However, when WNBA star Diana Taurasi gets a technical foul, there is no conversation on “First Take” or ESPN about it.

06/12/2024

In a series of landmark decisions, the U.S. Supreme Court has not only ended affirmative action in college admissions but also influenced the cessation of programs like the Fearless Fund, a grant program specifically designed to support Black women entrepreneurs. These rulings raise significant questions about the future of diversity initiatives and support systems for Black Americans.

The Fearless Fund, established to empower Black women entrepreneurs, faced intense scrutiny following the Supreme Court’s decision on affirmative action. Critics argued that race-based programs, even those aimed at addressing historical inequities, could no longer operate under the new legal landscape.

Consequently, the Fearless Fund announced it would halt its grant program, causing concern among advocates who viewed the fund as a crucial resource for Black women in business.

The Supreme Court’s ruling against affirmative action has immediate and long-term consequences for college admissions. Public colleges and universities must now revise their admissions policies to exclude race as a factor. This shift will likely lead to a decrease in the enrollment of Black and brown students at highly selective institutions, as these schools seek new methods to maintain diversity.

Black and Brown Students: With race no longer a consideration, Black and brown students may find it more challenging to gain admission to prestigious colleges and universities. Admissions committees might place greater emphasis on socioeconomic status, personal essays, and extracurricular activities to ensure a diverse student body.

Other Minority Groups: Native Americans, Pacific Islanders, and other minority groups that benefited from affirmative action will also face similar challenges, potentially leading to decreased representation in higher education.

HBCUs could see an increase in applications as Black students seek environments where they feel supported and valued. However, this influx could strain resources and funding, as these institutions work to accommodate more students.

Imagine this: You’re scrolling through your business’s latest reviews, basking in the glow of positive comments when suddenly, you stumble upon a scathing critique. Your heart sinks. Negative feedback can feel like a personal attack, but it doesn’t have to be a death sentence for your business. In fact, it can be a golden opportunity to shine. Here’s how to handle it like a pro and turn criticism into a catalyst for growth.

1. Stay Calm and Objective: Picture this as your moment to shine under pressure. Take a deep breath, and remember, it’s not about you—it’s about making your business better. Keeping your cool is the first step in transforming negative feedback into positive change.

2. Acknowledge the Feedback: Think of this as your chance to show empathy. Respond promptly with a heartfelt message. Thank the customer for their input and let them know you’re listening. A simple acknowledgment can turn a frustrated customer into a lifelong advocate.

Close your eyes and imagine the epitome of confidence and allure—a woman who radiates success, struts with purpose, and carries an infectious energy that lights up a room. She is the embodiment of personal triumph: smart, quick, enterprising. Imagine she moves with a cinematic grace, her theme music palpable as she passes by in what feels like slow motion. Her outfit is impeccable, her hair shimmers under the sun, and her smirk hints at a deep-seated joy and self-assurance.

Now, imagine she is you.

Becoming her begins with envisioning success—not as an external ideal but as a personal narrative. This woman isn’t a stranger; she is the ‘you’ that has always existed in your aspirations. This question resonates deeply, especially in communities striving to uplift and empower. Let’s understand the assignment. Grant writing isn’t just about putting pen to paper; it’s about crafting a narrative that compels, convinces, and converts. For many black women leading projects and visions, tapping into these funds can be the breakthrough moment for turning ideas into impactful realities.

Grant writing is a fundamental skill that can unlock doors to substantial funding. A successful grant proposal articulately communicates the need for a project, its goals, and how it intends to achieve them, clearly laying out the anticipated outcomes and their measurements.

Shadé Akande isn’t just talking about change; she’s building it, one powerful connection at a time. As the mastermind behind , Shadé is on a mission to create a world where Black and Afro-Latinx women in leadership aren’t just surviving—they’re thriving. Drawing from her deep well of experience from corporate giants like Google and Verizon Wireless, she’s turning the traditional networking model on its head.

For Shadé, ONE X LEAGUE is more than a network—it’s a lifeline. It’s about showing up in spaces where you’re not just allowed, but invited, celebrated, and understood. This isn’t about handing out business cards in stuffy conference rooms. It’s about cultivating deep, personal connections that fuel professional growth and personal wellness.

This vision sprouted from Shadé’s own journey. Working in HR at some of the biggest firms globally taught her a lot about what’s missing in the corporate support system for Black and Afro-Latinx women. It’s one thing to climb to the top; it’s another to do so while trying to fundamentally alter spaces that aren’t built to understand your experience or culture.

With ONE X LEAGUE, she’s crafting a sanctuary where members get real about the challenges and triumphs of being at the top. Whether it’s through retreats focused on wellness or seminars about building generational wealth, Shadé’s league ensures that its members have access to everything they need to not just lead but excel.

We had the distinct honor of speaking with Shadé Akande in an interview, where she shared her invaluable expert insights.

💬 Snippet from our interview with !💬

Genie Alexander: You and your beautiful wife La Miya Good are seen as a black love symbol within our community. From your perspective, what are the key components of a healthy, long-lasting relationship?”

Eric Bellinger: “Yes! You know... a lot of people make commitments, but you’ve got to be committed to that commitment. It’s a two-step layered process. When the going gets tough, a lot of people are ready to just get going. And I think I always know, that the grass is always greener where you water it. I think it’s just about sticking to the commitment, it’s not always going to be easy, but when you get through each endeavor or obstacle, you feel so much better. Imagine growing strong with somebody as opposed to starting over with somebody.”

In the wise words of the late fashion icon Virgil Abloh,

“Perfectionism doesn’t advance anything. Ironically. As a creative and a designer, there’s no wrong way to go about the future of your career. The only failure is not to try.”

This poignant reflection strikes at the heart of what it means to be a creator in any field—not just in design, but in any endeavor where innovation and expression intersect.

As we navigate our paths, the pressure to be perfect can be overwhelming, not just as a standard to meet, but as a shield against the vulnerability of exposure.

This pressure can make us feel that unless every detail is flawless, our work isn’t worthy of being shared. But here’s the heartfelt truth: no one is perfect. Every masterpiece has its flaws, which, more often than not, are what make it resonate so deeply.

The Hidden Barriers of Perfectionism

- Imposter Syndrome: Perfectionism often ignites a crippling doubt within us known as imposter syndrome. It whispers that we’re never enough, that our skills don’t measure up, that our voices shouldn’t be heard. Remember, these whispers are distortions of the truth. Every creative work you admire, every success story, has behind it a trail of untold failures and countless attempts.
